6. Streaming Software. Some options are free, which is good for people or organizations on a tight budget. You can go live on Facebook or YouTube directly from the webcam on your phone or computer, and from other social media platforms, such as microblogging site Twitter and live gaming site Twitch.
Facebook will let you connect a camera directly through its app to go live. In the Facebook mobile app, tap Live button below where you post content. A hit Go live and you will see a countdown prompt from 3, 2, 1 — and you’re online. Click on x when you are ready.
From a computer, make sure you’re signed in to your Facebook group page or your own and select Live video. You will be taken through the steps to Go live immediately or until Create a live video event which you can schedule and publish later.
youtube, unlike Facebook, there are no membership or registration requirements to watch a video. However, the platform has restrictions on those who post, so live streaming on your channel may be disabled. Be sure to familiarize yourself with all of YouTube’s rules before you begin.
• To broadcast live from a smartphone, you will need at least 50 subscribers for your channel. In the YouTube app, go to the bottom and tap Create | Go live. To stream your phone’s screen, tap Create a channel | Share screen | Go live. A hit finish when you are ready.
• To stream live from a laptop, open YouTube, click Create | Go live at the end Completion.
• If it is the first time you and your group have made a live video stream available on either a mobile device or laptop, YouTube requires the channel to be verified in a two-step process that the company says can take up to 24 hours. You will only need to do this once.
If you’re connecting an additional camera or microphone, you may need to use an encoder — software that companies have developed in collaboration with YouTube. Be sure to test everything before the big event, which is always a good idea no matter what, when, and where you decide to go live.

The programs also allow you to conduct remote on-air interviews and bring in multiple guests. Pricing starts at $16 per month for ECAMM and Restream.io and $20 per month for StreamYard.
One last tip: Make sure your computer cable is long enough to easily connect to your camera with some lag. At a recent local school board candidate debate I was covering, my 6-foot cable wasn’t long enough to connect the laptop and camera. At some point, the cable was pulled — and the live broadcast along with it.
