Let’s begin with our top story. Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma is all set to make her Cannes debut which is scheduled to run from May 16th to May 28th. She will honour women in cinema along with Hollywood actor Kate Winslet. This highly anticipated event draws filmmakers, actors, and cinema enthusiasts from all over the world to celebrate the art of cinema. Emmanuel Lenain, who is the French Ambassador to India, also took to his Twitter handle and dropped a picture with cricketer Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma. In the past, Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor and other Indian celebrities have walked the red carpet at Cannes.
Moving on. The trailer of Kathal, starring Sanya Malhotra, was released on Thursday, May 4th. The comedy, also starring Vijay Raaz, Rajpal Yadav and Gurpal Singh, follows a bunch of cops tasked with the case of missing jackfruits stolen from a politician’s house. The film appears to be quite aware of its silly world and accepts the investigation’s bizarreness. But despite all of that, this film is said to be based on ‘true-ish events’. Directed by Yashowardhan Mishra, and written by Ashok Mishra and Yashowardhan Mishra, Kathal is produced by Sikhya Entertainment and Balaji Telefilms Ltd. The film releases on Netflix on May 19.
Producer Guneet Monga, who brought the Oscar home with The Elephant Whisperers, on Thursday, May 4th said that winning the coveted award has not added any extra pressure when it comes to backing films. She was speaking at the trailer launch of her upcoming production venture Kathal in Mumbai. She said – “We are ready for this kind of pressure. To be honest, all we can do is wake up every morning and be honest with the story that we are telling. All the awards and rewards are not under our control. Every film has its own journey. You never make content for an award. You just make a piece of cinema because you love the story.”
Meanwhile, Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri in his latest podcast with Sudhir Mishra, said, “I have been boycotted in this industry. I have found my solace in middle-class people. And when I talked to housewives, they mentioned having issues with this over-exposure and vulgar display of physical attitude. People are irritated because films do not address the real concerns.” The Kashmir Files director also said that nobody, besides him and Kangana Ranaut, is questioning the practices of the Hindi film industry. He told Mishra – “If the establishment does something wrong, we have the right to question it, at least the intellectuals and liberals should do it.”
Veteran actor Anupam Kher will play the lead role in Vijay 69, an upcoming slice-of-life film from YRF Entertainment. The film will be directed by Akshay Roy, the filmmaker behind Ayushmann Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra’s 2017 movie Meri Pyari Bindu. Vijay 69 will narrate the life of a sexagenarian man who decides to compete in a triathlon contest at the age of 69. Vijay 69 is the third project from YRF Entertainment, the newly launched digital arm of the production banner Yash Raj Films. The company earlier announced two series — The Railway Men and Mandala Murders.
Meanwhile, megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who is shooting for Section 84, on Thursday, May 4th said shooting for the courtroom drama thriller is “taking a lot out” of him. The 80-year-old actor took to his blog to share a work update with fans and followers. He wrote – “I must confess that the film is taking a lot out of me as far as the nature of the film and role is, which is why when the day work is done it does not leave you even as you set off for home. It remains a pleasant disturbance.” Section 84 is written and directed by Ribhu Dasgupta of The Girl On The Train fame.
Bollywood actor Zayed Khan recently shared that it got tougher for him over the years to find work as he went to various film studios, but was only faced with rejection. He also revealed being disappointed by ‘some near and dear ones’. While interacting with Bollywood Hungama about his upcoming mockumentary, Zayed said, “About a year and a half back, I was in a very low phase of my life where I was not taking care of myself. It was because of the attempts I had made to meet people and I had heard so many NOs from people, including close friends, that I almost forgot that I had ever been a star. I was very low at one point.”
Lastly, veteran singer Hariharan has given his voice to some of AR Rahman’s most popular melodies and the song that first brought them together was Roja’s “Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyara Hai”. But after watching the film, Hariharan was ‘disappointed. In a recent interview with Rajshri Unplugged, he shared – “I was very disappointed after watching Roja. I said it’s such a good song but it’s coming during the closing credits. People are leaving the theatre. I kept telling the people around me to stop and listen. Throughout the film, I kept wondering ‘where is my song? Has it been cut?’” Hariharan also acknowledged that Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyara Hai “got so popular” as a patriotic song and achieved “tremendous” fame.
