Actor Rani Mukerji, in her latest, played a feisty mother fighting the custody of her children in a foreign land in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. But she said that it concerns her that there is constant chatter about whether women-centric films are box office draws or not. Rani, in a statement, said, “The fact that Mrs Chatteree vs Norway is a hit today is because people want to see strong woman protagonists like this on the big screen. There is constant chatter about whether women-centric films are box office draws. Of course, they are. But it is not just about how much it collects at the box office because one should also factor in the cost of the film.”
Filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar says he approached Bloody Daddy as a big-budget OTT movie designed in a way that its story can be taken forward. A remake of the 2011 French film Sleepless Night, the movie stars Shahid Kapoor as Sumair, who faces off against white-collar drug lords, deceitful friends, a ruthless crime boss, and both corrupt and honest cops – all during one fateful night. Zafar, who has directed films such as Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai, told PTI in an interview – “Bloody Daddy has not been compromised budget-wise and scale-wise to make it look like an OTT film. The story is supported and backed by a certain kind of content. We are hoping that this becomes bigger.”
Meanwhile, Director Hansal Mehta admitted that his recent film Faraaz didn’t make much of an impact at the box office, but revealed that this was because it wasn’t given a proper theatrical release. He told Newslaundry in an interview – “Ultimately, thank God for OTT, because the stories that, especially somebody like me, tries to tell, find an audience there. The film that I made some time back, Faraaz, was released almost apologetically. And just 80 shows around the country. It didn’t do anything theatrically, but the moment it dropped on Netflix, it found an audience.” Faraaz marked the first of three Anubhav Sinha productions, along with Bheed and Afwaah, to have received a very limited theatrical release this year.
Actor Naseeruddin Shah says the only way to fight bigotry, propaganda and films designed to spread disinformation is through artists speaking up and using their voices in making a difference. Shah told indianexpress.com in an interview on Monday, 29th May – “To make your voice heard, if it carries any weight – choose to not participate in movies which clash with your own beliefs, or any work which clashes with your beliefs. To make one’s voice heard, which is unfortunately not the case with a lot of people whose voices, if they were raised, would make a difference. But they’re all scared. They all want to be on the winning side.”
Lastly, Actor Manoj Bajpayee is winning accolades for his performance in ZEE5 original film Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai. The actor plays a lawyer who takes on a self-styled godman, accused of raping a minor. The love of audiences, however, is nothing new for the actor who has established his place as a powerhouse performer. In an exclusive chat with indianexpress.com, Manoj shared – “There was the time I felt I was probably in an illusion that I was a good actor. People would comment that I neither look like a hero nor a villain. They would always put me as a sidekick to the villain, not even the hero’s friend.”
