In our top story. Filmmaker Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani was released in theatres today. Starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead roles, the film is a romantic drama, which also marks Karan’s comeback as a director after seven years. The film revolves around two people from different cultures who fall in love and decide to swap families for three months before tying the knot. The film also stars veteran actors Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and Jaya Bachchan in pivotal roles.

Moving on. Nitesh Tiwari’s Bawaal, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, has landed in controversy internationally as the Jewish human rights body Simon Wiesenthal Center has objected to the way the film has conflated the tragedy in the narrative. SWC is a Jewish human rights organisation that defends the safety of Jews worldwide and calls out anti-Semitism and hate. The organisation also works towards preserving the memory of those who were killed during the Holocaust. SWC Associate Dean and Director of Global Social Action, Rabbi Abraham Cooper said – “Amazon Prime should stop monetizing Bawaal by immediately removing this banal trivialization of the suffering and systematic murder of millions of victims of the Nazi Holocaust.”

Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar recently took to Twitter to praise filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which was released worldwide on July 21st. He also gave a befitting reply to a user who tried to test his knowledge of the film. Javed tweeted, “Watched Oppenheimer 6 pm show at PVR Juhu. It’s not just a good film but a great film.” However, a user asked Javed, “Explain isotope please,” and the screenwriter was quick to reply – “It is the smallest unit of matter that has all the qualities of an element but, knowing this is not necessary to understand the film. It is a story of a human being who happens to be a scientist.”

Meanwhile, singer-songwriter Jasleen Royal said it is surreal how her compositions, ‘Din Shagna Da’ and ‘Ranjha’, found their way into real-life love stories of celebrity couples. Virat Kohli-Anushka Sharma and Sidharth Malhotra-Kiara Advani used the tracks at their weddings. Jasleen’s Din Shagna Da was originally composed for Anushka’s 2017 film Phillauri but became a sensation after the couple’s wedding. Similarly, earlier this year, Sidharth & Kiara also used Jasleen’s special version of ‘Ranjha’ for their wedding. The track was originally composed for Shershaah. In an interview with Pinkvilla, when asked about how she feels, Jasleen said – “Honestly, it feels like an achievement as a songwriter, that your song has more meaning to the people you have worked with.”

Actors Vicky Kaushal and Katrina Kaif, never leave an opportunity to express their admiration for each other. The duo married in a dreamy wedding ceremony in Rajasthan in December 2021. Now, after completing a year and a half of marriage, Vicky has opened up about their relationship. In a chat with the Bombay Times, Vicky talked about how he and Katrina have developed an understanding of each other. He called living with her a continuous learning experience. He revealed theirs is an incredibly exciting and enriching experience. He also shared that he has learned that it is not just about perspectives or opinions but about belonging.

Meanwhile, director Hansal Mehta said in a recent interview that a ‘quest for mass success is destroying storytelling in movies’. The filmmaker, who is enjoying the success of his recent Netflix series Scoop, was asked to comment on the state of Indian cinema. Hansal told Business Standard – “We’re a bit polarised in the kind of work you see. There is new, cutting-edge work happening in the streaming space. Many of us have found it to be a comfortable space to do the kind of work we do. But, every week we either ring the knell of films or herald the beginning of one. The biggest cog in the wheel of the ecosystem is the audience and we forget that.”

Actor Naseeruddin Shah at a recent event to honour projectionists pointed out the “bitter truth” of the Indian film industry. At the event organised by the Film Heritage Foundation, Shah said – “The bitter truth of the film industry is that those who work hard a lot during the making of the film, like light men and others, their income is not much. This is the nature of the beast. The issue is this thing remains the same even post the release of the film. For instance, if a film is successful, then distributors and exhibitors take the major share of the profit. Those who help achieve this success, no one cares about them. They are not even awarded.”

Lastly, Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal took to Instagram to express immense pride as his daughter Myra Rampal walked the ramp at India Couture Week this year. The proud father shared a heartfelt post, showcasing a video montage of Myra’s stunning pictures and videos from the event. In his Instagram post, Arjun wrote, “So proud of my little one, who’s currently killing it on the runway.” His post garnered an overwhelming response from fans and friends from the industry. The 18-year-old Myra Rampal is following in the footsteps of her parents Arjun and Mehr Jesia, who were successful models. Myra made her runway debut with Dior’s fashion show in Mumbai.
