In our top story. The winners of the 69th National Film Awards were announced at the National Media Center in New Delhi on Thursday, 24th August. The awards, announced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting saw Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon win the Best Actress awards for their films Gangubai Kathiawadi and Mimi, respectively. Pankaj Tripathi and Pallavi Joshi have bagged the Best Supporting Actor awards for Mimi and The Kashmir Files, respectively. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi has also won the Best Screenplay – Adapted and the Best Dialogues award. The Kashmir Files has won the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Film on National Integration. Shoojit Sircar’s biographical historical drama Sardar Udham has also bagged several awards.

 

Meanwhile, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali expressed his joy on Thursday, 24th August, after his lavishly mounted period biopic Gangubai Kathiawadi won five National Film Awards. Bhansali told PTI – “Good cinema gets acknowledged and a pat on the back from a respectful jury always brings joy. As far as cinema is celebrated from all over India, it is a wonderful moment for all of us. I’m too happy.” Bhansali won two awards — for Best Screenplay Writer (adapted), along with Utkarshini Vashishtha, and Best Editing for the film. The movie’s other awards were for Best Dialogue Writer for Vashishtha and Prakash Kapadia, Best Make-Up Artist for Preetisheel Singh D’souza and the Best Actress honour for Alia Bhatt.

 

Alia Bhatt took to her social media platforms to thank her Gangubhai Kathiawadi director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the crew, her family and the audience. Sharing a few pictures of herself doing the famous Gangu pose, the actor wrote – “To Sanjay Sir. To the entire crew.To my family. To my team. Last but not the least, to my audience. This national award is yours because, without you, none of this would be possible. I hope to continue to entertain for as long as I can.” In Gangubai Kathiawadi, Alia Bhatt played Gangubai, one of the most powerful, loved and respected madams from Kamathipura during the 1960s.

 

Kriti Sanon on Instagram, wrote – “Still sinking in.. pinching myself.. this has happened! Thank you to the jury who considered my performance worthy of the most prestigious award! It means the world to me!” Kriti also thanked the film’s producer Dinesh Vijan and director Laxman Utekar. The actor didn’t miss to thank her family for supporting her dreams. Kriti also congratulated Alia Bhatt who won the Best Actress award alongside her. Tagging Alia, she wrote – “I’ve always admired your work and I’m too excited that I get to share this huge moment with you! Let’s celebrate!” In the film Mimi, Sanon played the role of a woman who opts to be a surrogate mother.

 

Moving on. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is already setting the cash registers ringing with his upcoming action thriller Jawan. Scheduled to release on September 7th, the movie has amassed an impressive Rs 1.2 crore in advance booking in the US, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk. The film’s booking is also open in Germany, UAE and Australia. The movie’s trailer and the two songs, ‘Zinda Banda’ and ‘Chaleya‘, have garnered an overwhelmingly positive response from the audience. In the Atlee directorial, SRK will be seen alongside Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi. Sanya Malhotra and Priyamani also round up the ensemble while Deepika Padukone makes a special appearance in the film. The film’s music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander.

 

Kareena Kapoor Khan is all set to make her OTT debut on streaming giant Netflix. Though the details of the film haven’t been revealed yet, Kareena shared a hilarious announcement video on her Instagram handle. In the video, she is seen turning down various scripts that are similar to her roles in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Jab We Met. Sharing the video, Kareena wrote – “It’s a secret I can’t wait to tell.” Kareena might be hinting at Sujoy Ghosh’s upcoming film which is an adaptation of the Japanese novel The Devotion of Suspect X. The movie also stars Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma. According to a report by Pinkvilla, the makers will soon release the film’s trailer.

 

Meanwhile, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha composer Uttam Singh, expressed his discontent over the makers using two of his original tracks in Gadar 2. In a conversation with Amar Ujala, composer Uttam shared – “They have used two of my songs in the film and have used the background music that I composed. They should at least have the etiquette to ask me once before using my songs in the film.” Director Anil Sharma recreated the original film’s iconic songs, “Main Nikla Gaddi Leke” and “Udd Jaa Kaale Kaava.” The recreated versions in Gadar 2 featured in the work of music director Mithoon. The new version “Main Nikla Gaddi Leke” features the voices of Udit Narayan, along with son Aditya Narayan.

 

Lastly, in some tragic news. Veteran actor Seema Deo, who was seen in films like Anand, Koshish and Kora Kagaz, passed away on August 24th, Thursday at the age of 83. Her son filmmaker Abhinay Deo shared with indianexpress.com – “She was suffering from Alzheimer’s, but otherwise she was fine.” In 2020, Abhinay had opened up about his mother’s medical condition. Apart from appearing in several Hindi films, Seema was a renowned actor in Marathi cinema as well. She appeared in over 80 films throughout her career. Her Marathi credits include Jagachya Pathivar, and Vardakshina, among many others. She was last seen in the 2021 Marathi film Jivan Sandhya.
