Angad Bedi likes to strive for excellence. There’s an ease with which he talks about how far he’s come. The actor was last seen on the big screen as Janhvi Kapoor’s elder brother in Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020) and most recently was a part of the short film The List, starring Keerthy Kulhari. With R Balki’s upcoming sports drama Ghoomer, which also stars Abhishek Bachchan and Sayami Kher, in his kitty, the actor has a busy schedule to stick to. He finds time for a quick chat as he discusses all the things he’s learned and the experience he’s been gathering. The actor made his debut in 2004 with Sashi Kumar’s Kaya Taran, which was an adaptation of Vanmarangal Veezhumpol, a Malayalam short story by NS Madhavan. It is set against the backdrop of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and Angad was praised for his natural performance. His real recognition came with the movie Pink (2016) where he played a negative character. Here too, he won plaudits for his realistic portrayal of a hot-headed brat. He mentions that Pink kind of resurrected his career: “I was really challenged as an actor in Pink, and that also gave me my career back.
This movie put me on the map. And because of this movie, I am still part of the movie business. So yes, that will always be close to my heart,” he notes. His profile is interesting because of the variety of genres he’s been juggling lately. He reveals that feeling uncomfortable while doing something out of the box is what really fueled his passion for acting. He doesn’t want to settle, he wants to be pushed to the brink of doing something he’s not expected to do. “I try to be as diverse an actor as possible. In a space where I lean towards romance, I lean towards comedy and I lean towards drama. I have done intensive work that has given me many benefits and extended my journey in business. But I also want to pursue roles that both challenge and excite me as an actor.”
Challenges are part and parcel of being an actor. He speaks openly about the one persistent prejudice he has to deal with. He shares, “I just feel like the biggest challenge I face in casting is that when people think of me, they only think of me one way. I would like to change that. Inside Edge helped change that and my future projects will certainly help me achieve that.” He believes it’s all about breaking the mold and credits producer Siddharth Roy Kapur who approached him for the short film “ The List’ which helped him explore new horizons as an actor.
“The list required me to have no personality. It required that I didn’t even have a name. It was just him and her, and the hardest part was not having any dialogue for the first 13 minutes and keeping the audience’s attention. So I’m glad I got this call from Siddharth Roy Kapur himself who said you should consider it because it will help you break the mold. So yeah, I’m moving on, I’m leaning into different genres.” Having just finished an absurdist comedy like The List, he talks at length about the mime workshops he had to go through to really understand the narrative. Director Gaurav Dave made him see the film through a new lens and every aspect of the plot mattered. The acceptance of the short only boosted his confidence to push the envelope.
Every actor has their own process of getting in and out of characters. Commenting on the same, Angad says, “I try to get into the skin of the role in the first 15 days and before that in the workshops. Then you have to attach and detach things. I separate because it’s important and it refreshes me. Sometimes less effort is required, and that’s more of a challenge for me because when the camera is on and you’re acting, every actor tends to do a little bit more than what’s needed. The challenge is to do less than necessary and be as fluid as possible.”
Apart from exploring different genres, he also believes in approaching any subject for a film from the audience’s point of view. Talking about what kind of stories captivate him, he shares, “I’m someone who has to get excited the moment a movie starts, even as a viewer.
So I think from the audience’s point of view before I say yes to a project, because the audience ultimately has to like it. I’m quite commercial in my head. Our country is the mass belt that loves to thrill and love have fun.
Coming to Ghoomer, one of his most ambitious projects yet with R. Balki, Angad spoke passionately about being mentored by a great director like him. “He’s a phenomenal director. Action for him is always about how the other will react. And I’ve never been into romance. He made me go through this journey and it’s beautiful because it was something new for me. He is also doing Balki’s Lust Stories 2 – Made for One Other and promises that viewers will see him in a different avatar in this one too. He is also reported to be seen in Tiger 3. He is also said to be a part of the Hindi adaptation of Malayalam heavyweight The Great Indian Kitchen, though he denies the involvement.
On a more personal level, the party hound actor has been domesticated and domesticated through marriage and fatherhood. No more wild nights for him. Today, his world revolves around the duties of a father. He is a hands-on father and does not hesitate to change diapers if necessary. He says his world revolves around his little ones, daughter Mehr and son Gurik. He understands the nature of his work and his wife, actress and anchor Neha Dhupia, have work commitments that require them to travel more often than necessary. He says, “Now is the time when we can spend the most time with them because that’s when they have time. Tomorrow they will grow up, have wings, fly, find new friends and these friends will become a priority. So I just feel like it’s the most precious time to be there for them.” Speaking about the impact parenthood may have had on the kind of films he wants to be in, he reiterates that it’s made him a much better actor today. On the contrary, he is also firm in his belief that this cannot affect his career choice. “Working on films that have revolutionized my growth as an actor and being a family man are two different things that are equally important to me and I believe in balancing them,” he states.
In a funny turn of events, Neha, who was traveling with him during this phone interview, said hello to me and revealed that she loves her husband in Rozovo. “I love Pink. I like him on Inside Edge and I can’t wait to see him on Ghoomer,” she adds, before telling me to continue with my interview and to apologize for eavesdropping. When he reaches his destination, another dubbing session awaits him and he signs off. He sets out to conquer new horizons and Neha supports him every inch of the way.
