11 years after the last installment of the Harry Potter saga premiered, this franchise remains a fan favorite. In a journey that lasted 10 years — since Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premiered in 2001 — the final chapters of this story surprised the audience for good and for bad.
Since the last two movies focused on the climax of Harry’s battle against Voldemort, the stakes were as high as ever. For fans, seeing how the beloved characters and their foes ended up after the events of the series came to a close was a bittersweet event moment that rarely gets to be seen in franchise films.
10 Draco Malfoy Touched Rock Bottom & Then Set His Path Straight
Portrayed by Tom Felton, Draco Malfoy started as Harry’s ultimate school rival. Throughout the saga, Draco would go from a petty bully to an actual threat the moment Voldemort started forcing him to do his duty, commanding him to kill Dumbledore, which Draco actually attempted.
In the end, Dumbledore saved Draco from this heinous crime by arranging his own murder with Snape. After this, the Malfoys regretted their alliance with the Dark Lord. In the epilogue scene, Draco drops his kid at King Cross with his wife. In the sequel, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, his son, Scorpius, and Harry’s son, Albus, are close friends, showing that old wounds could be healed.
9 Neville Longbottom Became A Key Member Of The Battle
Although he was never part of the Golden Trio, Neville Longbottom was always one of their closest allies. While he started as an anxious, frightful boy, Neville evolved into a brave, determined man. For example, in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, he was a part of the team that faced the Death Eaters in the Ministry of Magic.
However, Neville’s ultimate act of courage was killing Nagini using Godric Gryffindor’s sword during the Battle of Hogwarts, proving once and for all, he was a true Gryffindor. After the Second Wizarding War, Neville married Hanna Abbot and became the Herbology teacher at Hogwarts.
8 Rubeus Hagrid Stayed On At Hogwarts
The Keeper of Keys and Grounds of Hogwarts, Rubeus Hagrid is a tall human/giant hybrid with a very good heart. From the very first movie, Hagrid acts like Harry’s ultimate protector: he rescues baby Harry from his parent’s house after their murders, he reintroduces Harry to the Magic World, and he carries Harry’s lifeless body after the battle with Voldemort.
During the Battle of Hogwarts, Hagrid was the primary connection between humans and giants. The films don’t expand on his friendship with Harry after the battle, but it’s safe to say they kept in touch. During Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Hagrid invites Albus Severus to have tea with him as he did with his father.
7 Minerva McGonagall Became Headmistress
Professor Minerva McGonagall was the Head of Gryffindor and professor of Transfiguration when Harry first arrived at Hogwarts. However, as the films moved forward, she became one of the strongest members of the Order of the Phoenix.
The last time fans saw McGonagall in the films, she was leading the teachers and students against the Death Eaters during the Battle of Hogwarts. Fortunately, she was one of the survivors of this encounter. After surviving the Second Wizarding War, Professor McGonagall officially became Hogwarts’ Headmistress, filling the role left by Dumbledore’s death.
6 Severus Snape Died A Hero
One of the most complex characters in the Potterverse, Severus Snape went from zero to hero. As a former Death Eater, Snape had Voldemort’s trust, so he worked as a double spy for Dumbledore while also working as a Hogwarts professor. However, Snape was still bitter and violent towards Harry, who didn’t understand why until he learned about Snape’s past.
As it turned out, Snape had always been bullied by Harry’s dad, James Potter. To make things worse, he was in love with Lily Evans, Harry’s mother. Given this, Snape had complex feelings towards Harry, even though he had sworn to protect him. In the end, Snape died by Voldemort’s hands, who thought he was the master of the Elder Wand.
5 Lord Voldemort Was Ultimately Defeated
Tom Marvolo Riddle, also known as the Dark Lord or Lord Voldemort, was Harry Potter’s biggest enemy. Voldemort was a powerful wizard who wanted to control the Wizarding World, establishing a pure-blood supremacy system in its society. According to a prophecy, Harry would be the only one capable of stopping him, which is exactly what happened.
With the help of his Death Eaters, Voldemort managed to gain a physical body at the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. After learning about his Horcruxes, Harry and his allies destroyed them all, weakening Voldemort enough for him to die when his own Killing Curse rebounded on him for the second time in his life.
4 Albus Dumbledore Sacrificed Himself For The Greater Good
Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore was the Headmaster of Hogwarts and the founder of the Order of the Phoenix. Considered one of the greatest wizards of his time, Dumbledore was always Harry’s spiritual guide in the magical world, a sort of parental figure the orphaned boy always lacked.
Given this, Dumbledore’s eventual fallout with the Boy-Who-Lived due to his constant secrecy was rough on the hero. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore died at the hands of Snape. However, to everyone’s surprise, this wasn’t a murder. Instead, Dumbledore and Snape had already planned it to ensure Draco’s innocence and the proper handling of the Elder Wand. This was, without a doubt, one of Dumbledore’s smartest decisions.
3 Hermione Granger Became Minister Of Magic
From their first year at Hogwarts, Hermione Granger was a key character in Harry’s battle against Voldemort. Dubbed the smartest witch of her generation, Hermoine possessed great knowledge in magic, as well as in wizarding history, and pretty much any subject. This allowed her to solve more than one mystery throughout the trio’s journey.
In the end, Hermione was one of the lucky survivors of the Second Wizarding War. Once things were safe, she restored her parents’ memories and eventually married Ron Weasley, with whom she always had a will-they-won’t-they relationship. They had two kids, Rose and Hugo. In Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Hermione had become the Minister for Magic.
2 Ron Weasley Became An Auror
Ron Weasley is Harry Potter’s first friend in the magical world. He’s a humorous but insensitive boy who provides insight into the magical world since he’s the only one out of the three main characters who was raised as a wizard. Although loyal, Ron tends to be impulsive with his decisions. His constant sense of inferiority put him at odds with Harry a couple of times.
Ron and his whole family fight in the front lines of the Second Wizarding War, losing one of their members, Fred. After the war, Ron became an Auror while also working with his brother George in his store, Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. The movies show Ron taking his kids to King Cross with his wife, Hermione.
1 Harry Potter Formed A Happy Family With Ginny Weasley
Raised by muggles in abusive conditions, Harry Potter grew up to realize he was the savior of the Wizarding World. This came with an overbearing amount of fame and a tyrannic dark wizard always behind him. During his seven years of school, Harry had to survive Voldemort’s many attempts at killing him.
After realizing he was the last Horcrux, Harry himself died, only to return and defeat the Dark Lord in the last duel. Following the war, he married Ginny Weasley, his high-school sweetheart. They had three children: James Sirius, Lily Luna, and Albus Severus. Together with Ron, Harry worked as an Auror. He became Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement in 2020.
