Evan Peters has been praised for his recent Netflix series hit Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. The compliments received often include his tremendous portrayal of such a mentally unhinged human. While this is what actors aim for, the toll it took on him tells another story.

The emotionally grueling embodiment of this criminal is among the hardest things Peters has endured in his career. He shared the character messed with him was because he “was gonna have to go to really dark places and stay there for an extended period of time.”

In 2019, Joaquin Phoenix starred in the DC film The Joker. This origin story centers around a man who has faced isolation, been bullied, and overall disregarded by his society, leading him to a life of villainy. To be as authentic as possible, Phoenix lost 50 pounds for the role.

Unfortunately, the weight was lost so quickly and drastically– and kept off for the duration of shooting– that Joaquin developed an eating disorder from it. He became obsessed with his body/weight, and after wrapping struggled to get back to a healthy mindset regarding food and fitness.

Austin Butler put is all into playing Elvis Presley in the 2022 biopic Elvis. Playing a role for a man who has worldwide renown put a lot of pressure on Butler, pushing him to great lengths to get it right. Because of this, filming became pretty awful for Austin.

The day after shooting wrapped, he woke up in immense pain and was rushed to the hospital, saying “My body just started shutting down the day after I finished ‘Elvis.'” Not only was there a physical toll, but Butler began facing an identity crisis after no longer playing the role of Elvis, unintentionally developing a voice and vernacular that matched that of The King.

6/9 Heath Ledger Was Forever Changed After The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight released in 2008 starring Christian Bale as Batman and Heath Ledger as Joker. Ledger is often coined as the actor who made this villain memorable. It took a lot of effort for him to transform into the Joker, both mentally and physically. He pushed himself farther than he ever had for a role, which is what led to his ultimate undoing.

Because of his dedication, he became sleep-deprived and exhausted. This was the cause for him turning to sleeping medication, which unfortunately became a dependency trailing to his untimely death.

The actress revealed that after the film, she had to attend therapy sessions for several years until she was able to “get Anna out of her system,” and that she was stepping away from any other roles/movies in the genre.

From Teen Wolf to Taylor Swift’s short film All Too Well, Dylan O’Brien has acted in a variety of personas. Among his most well-known productions is the Maze Runner trilogy, based off the books written by James Dashner. With all three movies being action-packed, O’Brien faced intense training and emotionally exhausting schedules.

For authenticity, Dylan was pushed to do many of his own stunts, which led to a horrific on-set accident. Because of how physically and mentally wrecked the actor was following his emergency room visit, O’Briend almost walked away from acting entirely. He still battles with the idea of stepping on another set.
