Erik ten Hag interview: on philosophy and Tyrell Malacia – Man United news and transfer news

Manchester United manager Erik ten Haag says his squad are working well and enjoying life as they go on tour.

Speaking of the club’s official website in an interview conducted just before the Reds left for Bangkok, Ten Hag said:

“Of course, I want to bring energy to my team. But I have to say the players are doing really well. They are really focused. They carry the energy for themselves.

“You can see they like playing football. They love playing football together and they really work well together.”

The Ten Hag also explained how much Steve McClaren wants as his assistant, partly because of his understanding of the club.

As for his other assistant, Mitchell van der Gaag, the boss said: “I think with both of them, also with McLaren, he’s been a coach since he was born. But Mitchell van der Gaag also has a lot of experience, first as a player, he played at the highest levels in different leagues, then became a coach.

“The most important thing about these two is that they know how to win.”

The boss also outlined the type of football he wants the team to play, giving an insight into what fans can expect to see next season.

“We want to play a proactive style of football. On and off the ball. Trying to do this should be our intention.

“Now it’s up to us, the coaches, to convey it to the team that we are in every situation, we are proactive, we are brave and we want to have the ball.”

The Dutchman described his philosophy and said that “building” a team is based on philosophy.

Reporter Stewart Gardner then asked Ten Hag about the new addition, Tyrell Malacia.

“I think he’s the modern left-back or full-back,” the manager replied.

“He fits the profile and most importantly, of any fullback, he closes down the right zone, but he can also be part of the offensive side of our game and he can do it very well, I think he’s going to really contribute.”

Malacia could make his United debut in just three days.

United begin their reign at The Hague with a friendly against old rivals Liverpool in Bangkok on Tuesday at 2pm UK time.

The squad has some notable absences including Cristiano Ronaldo, Phil Jones, Brandon Williams, Shola Shoretyre, Alvaro Fernandez and Andreas Pereira.

Ronaldo’s continued absence has been discussed and debated in the football world since it was reported that he wants to leave the club.
