EAGLES QB JALEN HURTS AND RAMS DT AARON DONALD TALK WITH PETER KING ON THIS WEEK’S “FMIA” COLUMN
“I’m here today to say that Aaron Donald joins Lawrence Taylor on my personal Mount Rushmore of defenses with two players from the last four decades. Donald, really, is probably better, and I can’t believe I’m saying it. – Peter King on Rams DT Aaron Donald
“(He is) the epitome of what a Philadelphia athlete is. He is the ultimate underdog, and this town loves underdogs.” – Eagles C Jason Kelce to King on QB Jalen Hurts
“You’d be naive to think the NFL isn’t concerned about its long-term talent pool. And think of parents of young athletes who have seen (Tua) Tagovailoa get knocked down, come back into the game, then be carted off the field four days later. What must they think?” – King on how the NFL’s concussion protocols could affect his future

They are the following accents from this week’s edition of Soccer Morning America:
EAGLES
Peter King on the Eagles’ Super Bowl chances: “Just five years ago, the Eagles were basking in the glow of their first Super Bowl victory. Now, with an almost entirely new cast, led by the 53rd 2020 draft pick, they could be in contention for win number two. Just like Doug Pederson trusted Nick Foles in 2017, Nick Siriani trusts Jaylen Hurts in 2022.”
Eagles cross Jason Kelsey to Hearts’ King: “(He is) the epitome of what a Philadelphia athlete is. He’s the ultimate underdog, and this town loves underdogs.”
Kelce to King on Hurts: “You want your quarterback to be confident in his abilities, but almost stoic. He made everyone feel like he was in complete control. Have you ever heard that saying that 80 percent of how you communicate is through body language? Jalen is definitely one of those 80 percent body language guys.
Hurts King because of his mentality: “Never get too high, never get too low. I just always try to keep the basics basic and control what I can and try to be the best quarterback and the best person I can be for my team.
Hurts King for what he learned from his coaches: “I learned something from Lane Kiffinfrom Brian Dabollfrom Mike Locksleyfrom Steve Sarkisian, in Alabama. Learning all these different ways of thinking about football conceptually really helped me. Then coach (Lincoln) Riley in Oklahoma. Then coach (Doug) Pederson. Now my trainers are here. I’ve been a sponge. I have observed and learned. I apply their lessons to the way I think.”
King on Hurts’ future with the Eagles: “It’s too early to think the Eagles are certain Hurts will be their quarterback for the next 10 years. Why even call now when there’s no real reason? There’s certainly a trend developing — that Hurts is going to be the franchise guy here. But until it does, and until the Eagles have to shell out the money for Hurts, they can build a more complete team.
AARON DONALD
King by Aaron Donald: “I’m here today to say that Aaron Donald is joining Lawrence Taylor of my personal Mount Rushmore of two-player defense from the past four decades. Donald, really, is probably better, and I can’t believe I’m saying it.
King: “If I had to pick any of them at 22, I’d take Donald. I can’t think of a higher compliment in my little football world to pay a defensive player than to say I’d pick him over Taylor…Aaron Donald is at least as disruptive and at least as impactful in the game as Lawrence Taylor was .”
King’s Donald on how he views his position: “I’m an edge that plays inside.”
Donald to King: “I think what people forget is that my sophomore year at Pitt, I played on the edge … And I played pretty well. So if I had to do it now, I think I could do it. I don’t know how well I could, but I know I could.
Donald King for his career achievements: “My expectations coming into the league were never that high. It’s so hard to talk about it, to be honest, hearing my name mentioned along with all the greats. I have surpassed everything I ever dreamed of, but I still have a lot to do. I’m not going to let it all sink in until I’m done, whenever that is.’
WEEK 4
King of the Packers season so far: “Strange season for the Packers, who are 3-1 despite the absence Davante Adams desperately. A lucky season, too, because the Pack is in the middle of the most generous six-game stretch — Chicago, at Tampa Bay, New England, Giants (in London), Jets, at Washington — on their schedule, hands down.”
King on Packers QB Aaron Rodgers and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick’s interaction: “It was great to see Bill Belichick and (Aaron) Rogers, in what is likely to be their last meeting on the field, spend considerable time talking before and after the game. Belichick, 70, and Rodgers, 38, will have to meet in the Super Bowl unless both hold out until the next Pats-Pack meeting in 2026.
King on Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin’s decision to bring in QB Kenny Pickett: “The fact that (Tomlin) pulled the starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky less than three and a half games into his Steeler trial is another big deal. Now is Kenny PickettIt’s Red’s turn to try to justify the faith the Steelers put in him by drafting him 20th last April.”
King of Jaguars: “I was very impressed with Jags Sunday. Competitive team, rush to the ball at all times, good presence at the rim led by Josh Allen. Trevor Lawrence he’s got to have a better feel for pressure in the pocket and he’s got to take better care of the ball, obviously… But Duvall wasn’t built in a day.”
THE KING’S WEEK 4 AWARDS
Offensive Players of the Week: Cooper Rushdallas, Saquon BarkleyNew York Giants, Zach WilsonNew York Jets, & Rashad PennySeattle
King on Rush: “He is now 4-0 as a player Dak (Prescott) relief pitcher, including three straight since Prescott went down on Opening Day with a broken thumb. He is also the first Cowboys quarterback in history to win each of his first four starts… Will Dak Prescott be ready to get his job back next week? Suddenly it’s not so vital.
Wilson King: “Wilson propelled Jets to fourth-quarter comeback: Down by 10 in the fourth, he went 10-of-12 for 128 yards and a five-yard TD pass to Corey Davis. Perhaps more amazing than the win in Pittsburgh: The Jets are 2-2.”
Defensive Players of the Week: Jordan PoyerBuffalo, & Hasson ReddickPhiladelphia
King of Poyer: “Late in the fourth quarter of a game tied at 20, the veteran safety started Lamar Jackson into the end zone on fourth-and-goal, perhaps the most pivotal moment of the Bills’ 17-point comeback and 23-20 victory over the Ravens.”
Coach of the week: Bill BelichickNew England
King on Belichick and the Patriots’ overtime loss to the Packers: “The Patriots are 1-3, but if Belichick ever coached a game that was a moral victory, this is it.”
Special Teams Player of the Week: Ryan WrightMinnesota
Goat of the week: Trevor LawrenceJacksonville
NEWS AND NOTES
King on how the NFL’s concussion protocols could affect his future: “You’d be naive to think the NFL isn’t concerned about its long-term talent pool. And think of parents of young athletes who have seen (Tua) Tagovailoa get knocked down, come back into the game, then be carted off the field four days later. What must they think?’
King on how the NFL needs to change its concussion protocols: “Force a player to sit on the bench when he takes a hard hit to the head and can’t stand or walk straight. In that case, that’s where the fix should start.”
Former NFL player Rob Ninkovich to King for head injuries: “I think if the 54-year-old Tua (Tagowailoa) could talk to the 24-year-old Tua, he would ask him, ‘What were you thinking?’ Twenty-four-year-olds think they’re indestructible… Head injuries are the most difficult injury for athletes. You don’t know the effect of most of them until later in life.
Ninkovich to King: “What really bothers me is that Tua is a much-talked-about person in a very sought-after position, so it gets a lot of attention. Rightfully. But what about offensive linemen or lesser-known players when this happens to them? Nobody notices. It’s been brushed under the rug.
King on the NFL’s decision to change the Pro Bowl format: “I don’t think the NFL deserves credit for turning the Pro Bowl into a skills competition and flag football event. The NFL wrestled with that decision for years, until an embarrassing display of non-football was shown on national television with players giving 36 percent effort.
