Clearly, the show ‘Dr. Arora Gupt Rog Visheshagya,’ directed by Sajid Ali and Archit Kumar, does not spark a normal dinner-table discussion, but it does raise awareness about how sex is stigmatised to the point where sex-related problems or sexual wellness are still taboo in India. This social change must be implemented, and the series, like Bollywood films on the same topic such as ‘Vicky Donor’, ‘Shubh Mangal Savdhaan’, ‘Khandaani Shafakhana’, and others, succeeds to some extent. Aside from that, it’s just a busy narrative with a complicated and uneven plot.

Created by Imtiaz Ali and directed by Sajid Ali and Archit Kumar, ‘Dr Arora’ has an interesting premise. But the series hardly does justice when it comes to exploring the psychological effects of problems that are so stigmatised that there is a massive hesitancy to speak about them openly.

It is an Imtiaz Ali product, one cannot negate it completely. There is a lot packed but with no aim or goal to reach. If the price is jumbled, the journey feels half baked sometimes and that happens here the most. Give it a try if you can discover more and educate me if I couldn’t decode it right!

The only problem with Dr Arora, is that it often seems unclear with the tone it must take. There are clear hat-tips here to eroticism, exemplified by the objectification of good-looking Bhabhi, but it’s never clear if the series wants us to take things in a lighter vein, or side with Dr Arora’s self-serious view of the world. The two can often be at odds, and herein lies a dilemma of sorts. The other, though not as big, issue is the show’s tendency to talk down to its audience, sterilise its language to use ling and yoni and not the million other words that people use

The show’s premise sounds like something Ali might have pitched to Ayushmann Khurrana at some point, before the actor (correctly) turned it down and put together a rival project (Doctor G) for himself. Or maybe it was the other way around? Who knows. But it’s clear that Khurrana’s mainstream success at tackling taboo topics has facilitated the emergence of stories such as this.
