Designer Dhruv Kapoor Adds Indian Magic To Milan Fashion Week 2023

At the closing of Milan Fashion Week 2023, New Delhi-based designer Dhruv Kapoor took centre  stage in Italy’s historic Palazzo Clerici showcasing his fall/winter collection in the charming landmark’s 18th-century Tiepolo Room.

The Godzilla Collection Showcased For Fall/Winter 2023

Through the interesting showcase, the designer attempted to reflect on the diverse personalities spread across modern-day society and aimed at creating an interactive community where personal values are constantly upheld. Kapoor’s most nouveau collection, called “Awakening”, explores its definition through an exclusive collaboration with Godzilla. This partnership creates a middle-ground between the worlds of fashion and film, channelling Godzilla’s silver screen identity through an all-new lens.

The collection included a fitted, ripped denim dress over loose jeans. Broad-shoulder suit jackets were combined with tight trousers that flared into a bell bottom. Oversized sweatshirts were layered with cotton tunics and a sheer lace pant. Godzilla raged on the front of a button-down shirt or tightfitting dress, while a silver pillow jacket had reptilian spikes down the back.

The designer was quoted saying, “Godzilla also has a very negative, monstrous thing attached to it,” Kapoor continued, “But that should not impede acceptance.”

The Designer’s Aspirations Via The Collection

Kapoor, who is a rather new entrant into the international fashion scene, even at Milan Fashion Week, hopes to promote an interior journey with a new collection in which he seeks to reconcile alter-egos; be they romantic, aggressive or pensive as a way of healing. He sends a message of radical self-acceptance in his collection, which combines floral prints promoting stillness, cartoon images of Godzilla representing aggression and lace details for romanticism.

Kapoor said, “It’s a very simple process. Look in the mirror and tell yourself, ‘I love you.’ And see how the magic starts to shift. You just need to admire yourself just the way you are,” Kapoor said backstage, adding that he has felt a dramatic shift since adopting the practice. “I don’t know how it comes. I never dwell on the how.”
