Delhi: From Monday, private car riders don’t need masks | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: From Monday, people travelling inside a private car would be exempt from paying a fine for not wearing face masks. The exemption, however, wouldn’t apply to people travelling by taxis or app-based cabs.
The decision was taken in a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) held on Friday under lieutenant governor Anil Baijal. An order issued on Saturday by the Delhi government’s Department of Health and Family Welfare stated that it was noted in the DDMA meeting that the positivity rate of Covid-19 infection has come down substantially and a majority of the population has been vaccinated.
The order further states that while not wearing a face mask in all public places has been made an offence, the penalty under this provision will not be applicable to persons travelling together in a private four-wheeler vehicle from February 28.
“The group of persons travelling together can be members of a family, a group of friends, or colleagues. The order essentially deems a private four-wheeler as an extension of personal space,” said a Delhi government official. “However, you would need to wear a face mask as soon as you get out of the private vehicle and into a public place,” he said.
The official said that the exemption from penalty would only be applicable in private vehicles and not in taxis or app-based cabs. “Both the cab driver and the passengers need to wear face masks and the penalty would be applicable to them,” he said.
In its meeting held on February 4, DDMA had decided to exempt single drivers from wearing masks in cars. Prior to this meeting, even people who were driving alone were penalised for not wearing a face mask.
The decision came only days after Delhi high court called the Delhi government’s order of asking motorists inside their personal cars to mask up as ‘absurd’. The officials had also accepted that the ‘over-enthusiasm’ of civil defence volunteers to penalise motorists not wearing masks caused a lot of inconvenience to people.
In a separate order on Saturday, the department also reduced the fine for violation of Covid-appropriate behaviour, including not wearing face masks, from Rs 2,000 to Rs 500.
