Chicago PD’s Benjamin Levi Aguilar talks Halstead’s absence and ‘complex’ new episode for Torres

Chicago Police returned Benjamin Levi Aguilar as a series regular for season 10, after making a splash as a guest star in Season 9 when Officer Torres teamed up with Detective Halstead. After Halstead’s game-changing exit last week, Torres is about to draw attention to the long-running drama when a shocking murder occurs in his own neighborhood. The new star spoke with CinemaBlend about what’s to come, including Torres’ place in intelligence after Halstead’s departure.

Torres was not only Halstead’s partner his appearance in season 9 (available streaming with a Peacock subscription), but Jesse Lee’s character Soffer brought him into Intelligence in Season 10 when they needed his specific skill set. With “Donde Vives” as the episode airing on October 12, Torres will have to work on a very big case without his first mentor at hand. Benjamin Levi Aguilar explained how Halsted’s decision to return to the army concerns Torres, saying:

It certainly affects him. [Halstead] was the guy who accepted him, and those moments where it was hard to trust him—to trust him, he had a trust issue—it just made that relationship more beautiful when he opened his heart at the end of season 9. I definitely think he’ll carry over everything he’s learned from Halstead, and he has so much respect for him.

Torres may not have had much time with Intelligence before his big episode on October 12, but much of his development came through his interaction with Halstead. The character will obviously not forget what he learned from the detective during their time in the same unit and what it meant to Halstead to accept him. Aguilar continued:

It’s an interesting dynamic because he’s learning from the other people on the team and he’s building that respect for each of them as he gets to know them, but he’s also testing the waters and holding his own. So I think there’s definitely a void there. That being said, Voight has also helped or agreed to accept other things for him. There is a lot to learn there. But yeah, it’s definitely a sad thing.

Although all signs point to the rest of the team welcoming him into their fold (and they haven’t had a new member by Rojas in Season 7), Torres joins a group of cops who have been working together since Season 5, when Tracy Spiridakos joined as a series regular. Between all the existing connections and the fallout from Halstead’s departure, it’s easy to imagine why Torres might keep somewhat to himself.

So what happens when the new guy to watch out for finds his personal life involved in an investigation? “Donde Vives” will require Torres to investigate a shocking murder in his own neighborhood and the promotion makes it clear that the stakes are high. Benjamin Levi Aguilar revealed how difficult the situation will be for Torres as the new man in intelligence:

It’s definitely so complicated because he has ties to this neighborhood and he has friends there who would take a bullet for him and maybe took a bullet for him and vice versa. So for him to come back and try to dig up the skeletons of this story and this murder will rub people the wrong way. It will also cause a lot of conflict where he has his brothers and his family and literally his mother. But it’s also scary for someone to become a cop now and know that their mother is living there with people who might want to hurt her, and that’s probably the most important relationship in their life. So absolutely lots of conflict.

Although only the episode will tell for sure, Torres seems to be on the verge of learning something that all intelligence veterans already know: working in this unit can have a negative impact on families. The character explained back in Season 9 that he lives with his mom, so it can backfire if he brings his work home with him… or brings his work to his own neighborhood. Benjamin Levi Aguilar shared that a “beautiful moment” between mother and son is coming, giving a window into his personal life:

I’m actually very excited that there will be a beautiful moment where he and she will be. I hope this isn’t a spoiler, but he and she just talk in Spanish, their native language, and I don’t think I’ve seen that much. I’m actually very proud that there’s this moment of just two people just talking in a foreign language on NBC. No Spanish, just fluent Spanish and we can see more of their culture and way of life. It’s just such a simple, beautiful scene.

Viewers will be able to see Torres and his mother speaking in Spanish in what will be a “beautiful scene.” Chicago Police often includes phrases in Spanish and – as Aguilar noted – Spanish, but not full scenes involving series regular. When I noted that the use of Spanish on network television is more here and there than full-on conversations, the actor (who was born and raised in Guatemala) responded:

Right, right, right. That’s why I’m so excited about it. I was like, “Wow, I can just speak Spanish!” Which, by the way, I was like, “Wow, well, now I know how beautiful it is to play in your own language.” [laughs] I said to myself, “This came so much easier for me!” It was a beautiful experience to have that.

Benjamin Levi Aguilar’s Comments About Speaking Spanish For NBC Primetime TV Show Actually Resonating What Chicago FireJoe Minoso said at the end of last season and suggest that viewers will get to know Torres better by the end of “Donde Vives.” We can only hope that both the cop and his mother are okay by the time the final credits roll as the case unfolds in their neighborhood!

Look what Chicago Police is in store for Torres in the next new episode on Wednesday, October 12 at 10:00 PM ET on NBC, after Chicago Fire (which recently brought great tragedy) at 9 p.m. and Chicago Med (which just conflict escalates) at 8 p.m. If you’re still mourning the loss of Halstead, you can blast back in time with our picks for Chicago PoliceUpstead’s best moments!
