A Chandigarh University student was arrested for allegedly leaking obscene videos of hostel inmates. However, the varsity has claimed that there was only one clip and it was a personal video. Here are the top developments.
By Nandini Singh: The Punjab Police on Sunday arrested a woman student of Chandigarh University after she allegedly made objectionable videos of hostel inmates public. The action was taken after hostel inmates claimed their videos went viral. However, the university issued a statement that there was only one ‘leaked’ clip and that it was a personal video that the accused sent to her boyfriend in Shimla.
On Saturday night, a massive protest erupted on the Chandigarh University campus in Mohali over the leaked clips. The protesting students alleged that the girl used her mobile to make videos of students taking a bath.
As the row over leaked videos erupted, the cops swung into action and arrested the girl. However, police refuted the suicide attempt claims made by the protesting students.
Here are the top points:
1) Soon after the accused was detained, Punjab Higher Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer ordered a thorough probe into the matter. According to police, no suicide attempts or deaths have been reported in connection with this incident.
2/2 I assure justice to University students especially girls. The DC Mohali and SSP have been ordered to conduct a thorough enquiry into the entire incident. Guilty would not be spared.

“As per medical records, no suicide attempt or death has taken place. One student who was taken in an ambulance was suffering from anxiety, and our team is in contact with her,” said Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vivek Soni.
2) A girl student, who was one of the students who confronted the accused, told India Today that the accused had placed mobile phones in the washroom and made videos.

“There are 50-60 videos of hostel inmates. She [the accused] sent it to her friend. When we asked about the incident, she accepted that she made the video and later deleted it,” the student told India Today.
3) The hostel inmate also told India Today that the college administration is trying to hush up claims. On one floor, there are 20 rooms, and four girls stay in one room, she said, giving a rough estimate of the numbers of girls staying in the hostel facility.
4) However, the police quashed reports that MMS clips were leaked online and maintained that there is only one video of the accused herself. So far, no such video of any other girl has come to our notice. It seems like more of a rumour, Mohali SSP Vivek Soni told India Today.

The mobile phones of the accused have been seized and will be sent for forensic examination.
5) In a statement released by Chandigarh University, Pro-Chancellor RS Bawa said, “The rumour which is circulating through the media that 60 objectionable MMS have been found of students is totally false and baseless. During the preliminary investigation conducted by the university, there have been no videos found of any student that are objectionable except a personal video shot by a girl that she shared with her boyfriend.”
6) Reacting to the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that a high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident. “Sad to hear of the incident at Chandigarh University. Our daughters are our pride. We have ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. Whoever is guilty will face strict action. I am constantly in touch with the administration. I appeal to all of you to avoid rumours.”
