Hailey Bieber celebrated New Year’s Eve in ritzy Aspen, clad in a Mugler minidress ($1,370) with racy cutouts that lent the look of a “whale tail.”
And Dua Lipa went for perhaps the most daring look of all with her crystal mesh Ludovic de Saint Sernin frock, which plunged so low in the back that her booty — and white thong — played peekaboo.
Of course, these three stars are no strangers to the head-scratching Y2K style; Bieber attended the 2019 Met Gala with her skimpy skivvies hanging out for all to see, while Lipa made headlines when she hoisted her G-string straps above the back of her low-cut Mônot gown in 2021.
Cyrus, meanwhile, doesn’t even bother with a dress half the time; she’s just as content to show off her stringy undies solo, whether she’s posing for a Gucci campaign or posting behind-the-scenes snaps from the VMAs.
Considering a number of other major names have also pushed the polarizing look recently — think Julia Fox all dolled up in Versace latex, Megan Thee Stallion’s white-hot Hanifa two-piece in Tokyo or Teyana Taylor’s edgy ensemble at the Billboard Music Awards — it’s clear the “whale tail” is still trending.
