Elton John, Tom Hanks, Jools Holland and Paul McCartney joined artist David Hockney at the opening of his new immersive digital art show in London’s King’s Cross this week.
The David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) exhibition is marking the launch of Lightroom – a four-storey-high, cuboid space that uses wraparound projection and audio to immerse visitors.
The artist-led venue is home to a range of the latest AV technology, including the UK’s first fixed Holoplot X1 Matrix Array sound system.
Lightroom’s integration partner Creative Technology, has installed two X1 arrays at either end of the room. Each comprises four X1 Modul 96s and four X1 Modul 80-Ss, embedded and entirely hidden within wall cavities to create an unspoilt 360° projection surface.
The Hockney exhibition also features 1,408 loudspeakers, 28 projectors and a digital canvas size of about 108 million pixels, as well as disguise media servers.
Holoplot’s chief executive, Roman Sick, said: “X1 has been deployed on some exceptional projects, all harnessing the power of our technology to create extraordinary experiences. Lightroom fits this calibre of enterprise, providing a limitless environment for artists to play within.”
