The Arizona Cardinals are very excited about the direction of the team with new general manager Monty Ossenforth. Team owner Michael Bidwill said Ossenfort’s detailed plan stood out from the other contenders.
Bidwill, who appeared on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM last week, also revealed something Ossenfort did that no other candidate did.
He went out and had conversations with potential head coaches before he was able to hire them.
Ossenforth was interviewed for the general manager job last year and was touted as a future CEO the year before. In interviews, he gave names of coaches he would like to interview and target to lead his teams.
“He knew he was going to get a chance to be a general manager, so what did he do last year after throwing out a bunch of names,” Bidwill asked. “What he did is last year he took all his free time and spent time interviewing a coach. He did his own interviews.
Ossenforth realized that some of the coaches he was recommending were people he had never spoken to. So he contacted candidates he thought would be good and interviewed them informally.
Jonathan Gannon, the Cardinals’ new head coach, was at the top of the list.
Bidwill noted that Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is also on that list. The Cardinals interviewed Glenn for the job before hiring Gannon.
Ossenforth took guys off his list after talking to some and was more excited than others, Bidwill explained.
Gannon was one of those guys.
They are now working together, and Bidwill is excited to have a general manager with a detailed plan from an organization that has sustained success and with enough “foresight and vision to remove the chaff” coming prepared with coaching candidates from around the world, a league with which there was some connection.
It’s a good start for Arizona’s new GM.
