Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s Brahmastra is only four days away from its release. The film, directed by Ayan Mukerji, is one of the biggest and most anticipated films of this year. It will be released in three parts, and the first part, Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, is slated to release on September 9. It will be released in five languages – Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.
As per reports, Brahmastra has managed to register numbers the very first day its advance booking opened. It is said that the film has already sold over 10,000 tickets, which is quite an impressive number. Now, speaking to IndiaToday.in exclusively, trade experts reveal how much is at stake for the film and whether it will manage to break Bollywood’s dry spell.
CAN BRAHMASTRA BAIL BOLLYWOOD OUT?
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, “Well, too much is at stake. From the producer’s point of view, Brahmastra is a very expensive film – they have invested a lot of time and money in the making of this film, as well as in the promotions. It is a very important film for our industry as well. As we all know, our film industry is going through a very tough and difficult phase. We are currently in the ICU, we had a line of flops, so let’s hope Brahmastra bails out the industry at this point.”
“It has been said that Brahmastra is one of India’s costliest films made on a budget of Rs 400 crore. But I am unsure if it includes all three parts or just Part 1. I feel, just for Part 1, they must have spent close to Rs 200 crore,” adds trade expert Ramesh Bala.
BRAHMASTRA’S SUCCESS = BOLLYWOOD’S SUCCESSFUL ENTRY INTO MULTIVERSE
More than the budget, exhibitor Akshaye Rathi feels Brahmastra’s plunge into creating a cinematic multiverse should pay off. He said, “It is not just about the budget of the film. A very ambitious attempt has been made by the Indian film industry to create a successful franchise that dives into the concept of a cinematic multiverse, where multiple films can be mounted and multiple stories can be told in the years to come. If you draw a parallel, Marvel has a multiverse in which multiple characters come in and go out, and multiple stories are told. That’s exactly what the makers are trying to do here. If this film works, then a franchise will be created. It will be a property that will keep making money for years. That’s the level of investment that’s gone into it.
IF BRAHMASTRA IS GOOD, IT WILL WITHSTAND BOYCOTT CALLS
Almost all major Bollywood films this year have crashed at the box office. Will Brahmastra stumble too? Taran says, “Just because a few films have not done well in the past, that doesn’t mean that it will affect Brahmastra. Yes, there is a lot of negativity towards Bollywood at the moment. I’m not denying that. There are a few people who are writing negative things on social media. But, eventually, what matters is the content of the film. If the content is strong enough, it can withstand any opposition – even boycott calls.”
Ramesh Bala adds, “It is not an easy environment right now, especially for Hindi movies, given films like Laal Singh Chaddha, Raksha Bandhan and Liger have not worked well. But for Brahmastra, the advance booking looks reasonably good. However, we have to see how the content of the movie is, and whether people like the content. One can be cautiously optimistic till the movie releases on Friday.”
Rathi adds, “The boycott call on social media is not affecting the film, and it is clear from the advance booking of Brahmastra. The only thing, in my opinion, that can affect business is if the content and storytelling is weak. That is something we will know on September 9. Historically, be it Wake Up Sid or Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewani, Ayan Mukerji has proven that he is a good storyteller. So, coupled with this whole play of creating a universe that will monetise over the years, Brahmastra looks like a potential goldmine. I am really hoping that Ayan delivers something great like he has done in his previous films.
“The advance booking has been very heartening as of now, so hopefully, it should collect beyond Rs 20 crore on Day 1. If the advance picks up by Thursday evening and a lot of spot bookings are added on Friday, chances are that it will cross Rs 25 crore on Day 1,” explains Taran Adarsh.
Due to the buzz, Ramesh Bala feels Brahmastra will do wonders at the box office. “The expectations are really high. So, on Day 1, it has to collect Rs 25 crore net, and probably around Rs 75 crore at the end of the three-day weekend, considering they are expecting Rs 10 crore in advance booking. It should be the Number 1 Hindi movie, bettering Sooryavanshi. Given the buzz and the promotions, it should manage to do that.”
Brahmastra also stars Nagarjuna, Amitabh Bachchan and Mouni Roy in key roles. It also features a cameo by Shah Rukh Khan.
