Big BrotherThe house of is open again! Each week, Parade.com’s Mike Blum will bring you interviews with this season’s houseguests until they are kicked out of the game.
“Nicole, I quote a Big Brother superfan rihanna you look so dumb right now. You thought you were choosing me as your Festie Bestie, that you were your security blanket. And here we are, both of us sitting on the rock because of your closest ally in the house who thought you’d be safe. I have never tried to cover my tracks or lie or mislead any of you. If you keep Nicole, you’re going to have someone who thinks they can manipulate your game and wrap you around their finger to get what they need.”
Those were some of the last words Nicole Layog heard in Big Brother 24 house, courtesy of fellow nominee, “Festie Bestie” and self-proclaimed nemesis Taylor Hale. The speech served as the culmination of Nicole’s eventful month in the game. For the chef, the first two courses produced a great result. She made a quick connection in the first week with Daniel Durstonand was soon invited into the “Po’s Pack” majority alliance to replace him Pigeon Aguilar. And she used her power to make the first big move of the season, being one of the architects behind the blind side of Joe “Pucci” Pucciarelli. With all of that behind her, Nicole was ready to cook for the rest of the season.
Then came Week 3. Misunderstanding Taylor’s intentions led to an intense confrontation in which she and Daniel accused her of being passive-aggressive and contributing to Paloma’s suspension. Seeing her treatment, as well as hearing about yet another majority alliance, caused the outsiders to band together to form “The Leftovers”. Their first move: Blinding Nicole’s future An incredible race partner Amir Jones. When Nicole lost the next HoH by mere points, the Leftovers were honestly torn between getting rid of her or Alyssa Snyder. But Daniel and Nicole ended up making the decision for them. When Monte Taylor told Daniel not to use the veto, they believed the HoH realized he didn’t have the numbers to keep Taylor. And so the unthinkable happened: Daniel backstabbed his closest ally. It wasn’t long before the Trickster Rats found out them it was the ones without the numbers, and Nicole’s game was cooked.
Now out of the house, Nicole spoke to Parade.com about the last-minute blunder she made, how she looks back on her relationship with Taylor and her approach to the game with “honesty and integrity.”

Let’s start with the hours leading up to your eviction. You and Daniel together didn’t have the votes a little while ago. And we’ve seen on the live feeds that you’re making your way around the house trying to flip votes with individual people. You told Alyssa that people who call her paranoid are “sick and childish”, told Michael that Jasmine, Taylor and Monte might have an alliance. Tell me about the intentions behind your last-minute dash.
Maybe I can work backwards. You may think that I am giving you a better understanding of what is in my brain. The last conversation was with Monte. I don’t know if it’s the tone of his voice or what. But for the first time, I finally believed what he was telling me. And I thought, “Why didn’t I see this before?” I literally thought Monte was lying to me the entire 30 days we were in the house even though I was in a relationship with him. He and I were able to clarify what really happened on the day of the veto meeting.
I know it’s a game. I know it is Big Brother. I know he’s not going to give me all his guts and information about why or how he lashed out at me and try to explain to me why it was important for Daniel not to use the veto. But of course, if we go back to that day, Daniel and I were like, “This guy is lying through his teeth. He thinks we’re fools!” When it was real, he really cared about me and had my back. (Laughing.)
And then before that conversation I had to talk to Michael. And I think the world is for him. I want him to win this game. I think he will go very far. He is a fierce competitor. He is very clever. And now I know he’s a lawyer. And I accept the fact that he’s really good at being a chameleon in this house. So I’m glad he and I were able to talk. I shared my frat/sorority/fraternity conspiracy with him.
I learned during the show that Monte was in the Alpha fraternity and Jasmine’s husband was also in the Alpha fraternity. And from what I understand, Taylor’s sorority is an Alpha fraternity sorority. So in my brain, while I was talking to Terence, I came up with this mystery that they’re probably in some sort of brotherhood/sisterhood because it’s a very strong bond. I think it’s possible, but I don’t know if it’s even true.
Let’s talk about Taylor in all of this. At one point I saw you say, “I never said anything bad about her. No negative words come out of my mouth. However, even outside of the argument you had, there were several times where you felt like you were insulting her, including threatening to “kick her ass,” accusing her of screwing around in the backyard, calling her a bully, and saying he is not a good person. In retrospect, how do you look back on how you viewed Taylor in the game?
Well, I appreciate you asking. I know a lot of the things I said weren’t nice, and I can tell a lot of them were strategic. It is Big Brother a house. This is the game. There are emotions flying all over the place. There are other people’s opinions. And I make them mine. And I certainly won’t deny that I didn’t say any of those things.
Like Taylor and I, as far as clearing the air, I’ve definitely talked to her. I was very open as far as apologizing and trying to make sure I left the house with her knowing that I was at least aware of most of the things I said. I definitely need to go back and I would like to watch, listen, read and see all the things so I can discuss everything individually with her when we have time to meet again in October.
During the game and even in your own ejection speech, you talked about playing with integrity and honesty. But we have seen you lie several times in the house to improve your strategy. How would you describe how you have incorporated honesty and integrity into your game?
Given the nature of the game of Big Brother, I was certainly playing a fair and loyal game to my union member Daniel. I mean, we did the Final Two together. And I definitely tried to put that out there. I wanted to make sure I could convey to the other houseguests that I would continue to try to do this going forward.
Speaking of Daniel, let’s talk about your relationship. You said you hated previous male guests who spoke to women in a negative way. And in this case, this person is one of your closest allies. How do you balance that?
I can’t speak for Daniel. In this game I realized that you cannot control someone’s actions. Period. And at that point, my intentions were not for him to obviously react that way. I didn’t realize it would affect him the way it did when I left the room. I was taking a breather. I asked him not to say anything. But he did. So here we are.
Not sure if you know this yet. But when you were both talking about Taylor at the time, she was asking Monte to help pray with her for your mother’s health.
(Pause.) It breaks my heart, it breaks my heart because… (Pause.) I feel bad and it breaks my heart. I never wanted her to feel this way. There are a lot of disappointments out there. And I just have to be honest. I take responsibility for the things I said. I made decisions to use her as a shield for strategy and try to protect myself by using someone who was not liked in the house. And I take full responsibility for that.
You and Daniel kept claiming that the other houseguests didn’t know what they were doing, that they were liars, clowns, etc., and you were the only one playing the game right. How do you feel about the state of the house now that you’re out of it?
I think I spent too much time in the kitchen! (Laughing.) These kids are great. I mean, I say “children” because they treated me like their mother. I am so proud of all of them and what they do. Most of this house has a message to send, and I’m glad it’s a positive one. in Big Brother There have been many cases of bullying in history where people rudely make people feel isolated and unwelcome in the house. And for that I give them a lot of credit. I’m just super excited to see how the rest of the season goes.
I roll them up. I’m happy for Taylor! We’ve shared some really good times over the past few days. And it makes me feel like we have a future as friends outside of this house. I mean we were holding hands the moment we sat in the nomination chairs. I have nothing but love and respect for her. I was a fan of hers in Week One. But I let other people’s feelings cloud my better judgment. And for this reason I am sitting outside the house.
