Ava Max continues her pop dominance with her second album Wall to Wall.
The follow-up to 2019’s ‘Heaven & Hell’ follows a tumultuous period in the musician’s life and has been described by the hitmaker as ‘heartbreak on the dance floor’.
“I was in a really long relationship and nobody knows that about me because I never talk about my personal life… but then it changed,” she told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 about the creative process.
“This album is about my life and what I’ve been through in the last year… It will make you cry and dance at the same time.”
Opening with empowerment Million dollar babyfeaturing a LeAnn Rimes interpolation Can’t Fight The MoonlightThe LP starts off on a high note, and across 14 tracks, Ava examines not only the breakup itself, but the lasting effects as she tries to move on with her life and overcome the breakup.
The juxtaposition of fast club beats and shrill lyrics is prominent in the pre-release track Maybe you are the problem — a pointed shout-out to her ex, who is dealing with the breakup of their relationship — as you watch weapons is another stellar pop anthem, to which she declares: “Stop using your words as a weapon / They’ll never bring me down”.
“Diamonds & Dancefloors” features some of the star’s most personal lyrics to date, with Hold on, wait a minute in particular a poignant moment recalling the moment she revealed her partner’s infidelity while One of us highlights their different attitudes towards romance.
“One of us would die for love / One of us would give it up / One of us would risk it all / One of us wouldn’t even call” she declares what might be her best pop moment to date.
Until the track is closed The dances are ready When she does, Ava re-emerges with a fresh new look and, having moved on from her recent heartbreak, is ready to move on with her life. “I want to give in to your dark temptation / I want to touch you like no one does / People like you and me are born to run / So where do we go when the dancing’s over?” she sings over the chorus, referencing Alice Cooper poisonwhile the album’s narrative comes full circle.
Since launching her career in 2018, Ava has achieved an impressive string of hits, including five UK Top 20 singles and the top of the chart Cute but Psychobut on “Diamonds & Dancefloors” she proves herself to be a performer of the highest order, delivering a collection that builds on the sound of her debut while serving up content that brings listeners closer than ever to the real Ava Max.
