Austin-Irving Library Will Screen Horror Movies Every Day In October

CHICAGO — Horror fans can celebrate all October with movie screenings at the Austin-Irving public library branch.

As part of its first Halloween film marathon, 31 Days of Horror, the library at 6100 W. Irving Park Roa, will screen a horror movie each day in October. The screenings are free.

The film list includes classics “The Exorcist,” “The Shining” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Every Sunday, it will have family-friendly options such as “Ghostbusters,” “Goosebumps” and “Hotel Transylvania” to accommodate younger audiences.

“Because we were not able to have much of in-person programs in the last couple of years, we decided to go all out this year,” said Lisa Roe, the library’s branch manager, who spearheaded the screening event.

Roe said kitschy décor and themed snacks will fill the screening room on the library’s second floor. Children can sit in cardboard cars and eat candy and popcorn while watching the movies.

Anyone who participates in the screening event will have a chance to win prizes donated by local businesses. The library will also offer special programs throughout the month and take-home crafts such as zines and comics.

Roe, a horror film fanatic, said she looks forward to chatting with people about her favorite movies. She also plans to show off her Halloween collection by wearing horror movie T-shirts to work every day in October.

“It’s going to be a great time,” Roe said.
