ARAI workshop on hydrogen to focus on role of green fuels as carbon neutral fuel for internal combustion engines

ARAI works closely with the automotive industry to provide support for hydrogen vehicle development through component and engine testing, R&D projects, and more.

The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) organized a one-day workshop on hydrogen as a carbon neutral fuel for internal combustion engines (ICE) at its Kothrud campus in Pune.

ARAI works closely with the automotive industry to provide support for hydrogen vehicle development through component and engine testing, R&D projects and consultancy, as well as setting up a hydrogen cylinder testing facility at its greenfield project in Takwe. ARAI, through the Technovus platform, also promotes start-ups in the field of hydrogen energy.

The government is giving green hydrogen a boost, with a total outlay of Rs 19,700 crore for the Green Hydrogen Mission in the Union Budget 2023, with the aim of transitioning to cleaner energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The government has set a target of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030.

The workshop will focus on a variety of hot hydrogen-related issues, including hydrogen standards and regulations, H2 engine development, fuel system components, as well as fueling infrastructure. Additionally, other topics that will be highlighted include hydrogen for stationary power generation, virtual development for hydrogen engines, hydrogen safety and handling, and hydrogen politics and economics.

Anuradha Ganesh, Chief Technical Advisor and Director, Cummins Technologies was there as the Chief Guest and was chaired by Reggie Matthai, Director, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).

Dr SS Thipse, Senior Deputy Director and Principal, Powertrain Engineering at ARAI said that ARAI is gearing up to upgrade the infrastructure for certification of hydrogen ICE engines and fuel cell vehicles. “This will enable the certification process of vehicles to ensure their safety and emissions compliance in place,” Thipse said.

Some of the other distinguished speakers participating in the one-day seminar are Krishnan Sadagopan, Senior Vice President, Ashok Leyland and Independent Director, who will focus on hydrogen as a fuel for IC engines, Alok Sharma, Executive Director, CHT, who will share the road map on various aspects of hydrogen, status and challenges. The workshop will also feature KU Ravindra, Vice President, Engineering, Bosch, who will speak well of the H2 engine fuel system development. Abhijit Phadke, Director, Laboratory and Test Operations, Cummins Tech Center India will talk about powering the future of hydrogen adoption with simulation.
