As reported by ELi, East Lansing Public Schools Trustee Debbie Walton resigned her seat on the Board of Education on Monday. She cited only “personal reasons.”

The board has now announced how members of the community can apply to be appointed to the seat. The appointee will serve until the end of Walton’s elected term, December 31, 2024.

Interested parties are asked to send a letter to Tali Farris-Hillen, a trustee who serves as secretary to the board. Letters should include information about the applicant’s background and experience and may be emailed to Kelly Hocquard (kelly.hocquard@elps.us), Board Officer. They can also be mailed or dropped off at the high school, 501 Burcham Dr., East Lansing, Michigan, 48823.

The application deadline is February 24 at 4 p.m

The board will then schedule interviews with the applicants. Under the Open Meetings Act, interviews will have to be held in public if the interviews involve a quorum of the board meeting together. (As ELi reported, the board was recently warned by its attorney to comply with the Open Meetings Act.)

A majority of the board will decide on the appointment. The vote will be held in public.
