Anne Hathaway is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most popular actresses. 8 Ella Enchanted
In 2004, Hathaway starred in Tommy O’Haver’s film Ella Enchanted, inspired by the novel of the same name by Gail Carson Levine. In this production, which was among her earliest projects, Hathaway starred as Ella, a teenager who received the gift of obedience from her fairy godmother at birth, a gift that turns out to be her worst nightmare. Weary of being forced to obey others, Ella embarks on a journey to find her fairy godmother so that she can reverse the spell and restore her freedom, yet in the midst of her journey, Ella meets the most unexpected love interest: Prince Charmont (Hugh Dancy).
7 Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is a romantic comedy that portrays love from many different perspectives through the eyes of its characters. Led by Hollywood superstars Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts, Jamie Foxx, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Garner, Patrick Dempsey, Eric Dane, Queen Latifah, and Kathy Bates, among many others, and directed by Garry Marshall, the movie recounts the events surrounding ten romantic relationships on Valentine’s Day, and the struggles that often arise when it comes to love. The film became Marshall and Hathaway’s third collaboration, with the actress starring as Liz Curran, a receptionist who at night works in a hotline.
6 The Hustle
Hathaway and Rebel Wilson headline this Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake as Josephine Chesterfield and Penny Rust, two utterly different con artists who become intertwined and, from then on, team up to swindle as many millionaires as they can. For the film, Wilson was also a producer, and she set out to appeal the R-rating given to the project, managing to have it changed to PG-13 before its release. Despite the actresses’ strong on-screen chemistry and a comedic and appealing plot, The Hustle was poorly received by critics, many of whom felt that the remake did not bring anything new to the table, other than being women-led.
5 Bride Wars
Emma (Hathaway) and Liv (Kate Hudson) have dreamed of their wedding day since they were little girls, and over the years, they have been planning every single detail of their weddings together. Now as adults, they are simultaneously proposed to by their boyfriends, and set out to plan their big day together, booking their dream venue: the Plaza Hotel. However, due to a mix-up in the dates, both weddings are booked for the same day, which triggers a war between these friends, who are ready to do whatever it takes to have the best wedding ever. While Bride Wars did not meet with good reviews from critics, the movie was a big box-office hit, and was even remade in China a few years after its premiere.
4 The Princess Diaries
The Princess Diaries was Hathaway’s film debut, and it remains one of her most memorable roles to this day. In this movie, Hathaway is Mia Thermopolis, a shy and insecure teenager from San Francisco who discovers herself to be the heir to the throne of a European kingdom known as Genovia. Therefore, aided by her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Mia has to work hard in order to succeed as a princess and live up to the people’s expectations. Joining Hathaway in the cast are Julie Andrews, Hector Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, Robert Schwartzman, and Mandy Moore, among others. The film, inspired by Meg Cabot’s novel of the same name, proved to be an unexpected commercial success, which was followed by its sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, released three years later.
3 The Intern
In 2015, Hathaway and Robert De Niro headlined The Intern under Nancy Meyers’ production and direction. In the movie, De Niro is Ben Whittaker, a widowed, retired man who decides to return to work and applies as an intern at a fashion company run by Jules Ostin (Hathaway). In spite of Jules’ first impression, resistant to work with him because she expected a different kind of assistant, she quickly discovers her intern’s potential, and he eventually becomes an essential figure in her career. Rounding out the cast are Rene Russo, Anders Holm, Andrew Rannells, Adam DeVine, and Zack Pearlman.
2 Ocean’s 8
Ocean’s 8, the 2018 film by Gary Ross served as both a sequel and spin-off to Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s trilogy, starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter. In the film, the audience is introduced to Debbie Ocean (Bullock), sister of the master thief Danny Ocean (George Clooney). Debbie gets out of prison and has the perfect plan to carry out the heist of the century. She intends to sneak into the Met Gala and steal a valuable necklace worn by actress Daphne Kluger (Hathaway). In order to accomplish her goal, Debbie needs to assemble an all-star team of muggers, which includes Kluger herself.
1 The Devil Wears Prada
Taking the top spot in this ranking is this 2006 film directed by Davil Frankel. In The Devil Wears Prada, Hathaway is Andy Sachs, an aspiring journalist who considers the fashion industry to be ridiculous, yet she lands a job that hundreds of girls dream of: she is hired as a personal assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the cold-hearted yet popular editor-in-chief of Runway magazine. However, the job proves to be far tougher than Andy expects, and she quickly starts second guessing herself as to whether she is really up to the task. Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Simon Baker, and Adrian Grenier round out the cast of this hit film that garnered an impressive number of nominations and awards.
