The Chairman of the National Population Commission, Nasir Kwara, has assured that the 2023 census will be conducted in all local government areas in the country despite the insecurity plaguing many parts.

THE HIT reported that no fewer than 527 local government areas out of 774 councils in the nation recorded security breaches between January and August 21, 2022.

But speaking at a trainers workshop in Abuja on Monday, Kwarra said the uncertainty cannot stop the commission from conducting a successful exercise.

He said apart from partnering with security agencies and state and local governments, the commission plans to use local residents in areas ravaged by insecurity.

Kwarra said: “We have reached the point of no return with the commencement of training for trainers. It is safe to say that we have reached the peak of the preparatory activities.

“These areas ravaged by insecurity are still part of Nigeria. We are working with the government at various levels as well as the security agencies to ensure that we catch everyone. Even if we have to use the locals in these problem areas to do the catching, we will do it.

“We will also seek the cooperation of citizens, Nigeria needs accurate data to plan every aspect of our lives. “

He also said that in preparation for the 2023 census, the commission has introduced new technologies that will ensure the exercise is reliable.

“In preparation, we have introduced new technologies such as CensusPAD and CSPro to ensure that the 2023 Population and Housing Census is reliable, trustworthy and acceptable.

“The geospatial and infrastructure data, as well as the enumeration form, will be uploaded to the tablets, also called personal digital assistants, which are ultra-portable computers that can run various software programs.

“Based on the above, data collection in the 2023 Census of Population and Housing will be done through computer-assisted personal interviews.”
