Although the world thought she was already married for the better part of two years, she and Simon didn’t tie the knot until 2018. “I’ve always called him my husband because we had a child together,” she points out. And she likes to play games with the press. “They know nothing!” she giggled happily. “They don’t know my son’s name or my son’s birthday. I have dominion over all. Love it.
“So,” she continues, “when I was 30, my whole life fell apart and I had no warning.” She darkly refers to the phrase “Saturn Returns” as she’s seen the lives of several of her friends also explodes as they enter their fourth decade. She vowed that “this will never be me,” and yet months after her birthday, she “took a bite out of a grenade” and threw it into the middle of her life.
She wants to play me the last song, the seven-minute opus that ends the new album. It’s a knockout. A twirling string, garland-inducing, jazzy, camping, swooning delight, filled with end-of-show world-weary reflection and featuring a vocal for the ages. She watches happily as I work my way through the listening. Breakfast at Tiffany’s was playing on TV in the studio when she recorded it, and she says it was the last song the film should have had. But it’s also the coda to her recent chapter.
“We kept it to ourselves for a very long time,” she says of the split. “We had to take our time because there was a child. It’s always going to be like, ‘Where’s Adele? Oh, she’s working’ or ‘Where’s Simon? He’s in England.” They’re still incredibly close. “I would trust him with my life,” she says flatly. “I totally realize the irony of being the heartbroken girl who found her man, being at Radio City Music Hall like,” she gushes in song, “It doesn’t matter, I’m gonna find someone like you… And then, yeah…” She sighs, alternately amused and mortified. “I screwed up. It didn’t work.”
But so many others did, she reasoned, and now she would sing about it, too. “I definitely picked the perfect person to have my child with,” she says of the lessons you learn when the days of young love give way to adult life. “This – after doing a lot of knee-jerk reactions – is one of the proudest things I’ve ever done.”
