Weapons Master

For the role

Managing a Firearms Licensing team for an area, you will oversee workflow management, ensuring effective NIA (National Intelligence Application) case management practices including tasking and coordination.

You will be responsible for:

  • ensuring the team meets national performance indicators
  • prioritizing firearm safety features
  • training delivery
  • support and implement change management practices to ensure process and legal compliance.

Ordnance Officer

Weapons officer

For the role

As a Firearms Officer working in the Firearms Team, you will use every opportunity to prevent harm through transparent, consistent, timely and efficient regulation, administration, education and promotion of compliance with the provisions of the Firearms Act.

We are looking for individuals with the ability to develop a solid knowledge of Firearms Law to ensure the highest level of satisfaction to the firearms community. You will need to have basic Microsoft Office competencies. Prior knowledge of firearms would be beneficial. Training will be provided.

Main Responsibilities

  • Review license files returned by veterinarians and approve applications if applicant is found to be “fit and proper.” You will also prepare Intent to Deny files for further consideration.
  • Conduct screening interviews in the areas.
  • Liaise with the firearms community to ensure license application and renewal workload can be efficiently managed.
  • Individual responsibility and accountability: Accountability for our performance and taking responsibility for our contribution and development.

Arms Vetter

For the role

As an Arms Vetter you will travel around your area visiting license applicants and their referees in their homes. You will be taught how to assess an applicant’s security as well as their suitability to ensure they meet the criteria set.

You will manage your interview time, usually starting your day from home or your local police station.

The ability to work flexibly is a requirement of the role as you will need to meet candidates and referees at different times, for example after they have finished work.

As a term member, your primary role is to interview firearms license applicants and other individuals to determine whether the applicant is suitable to be issued a New Zealand firearms license.

You will already have a fantastic communication style, solid computer skills, be self-directed and enjoy working in a goal-oriented environment. With excellent attention to detail, the ability to take instruction and embrace continuous learning, you will enjoy being part of a fast-paced, proactive culture where you will truly make a difference. You will be trained to interview, assess, use systems and set processes and have the mana and confidence to engage with members of the public.

You will need:

  • Strong interview and report writing skills.
  • Ability to be self-directed, work with minimal supervision, manage meetings and respond to receivables in a timely manner.
  • A full driving license and reliable transport are essential as you will need to use your own car for work purposes (expenses will be reimbursed). You must also have full car insurance.
  • Proficiency in using iPhone and laptop (software used includes Microsoft Office 365; Word, Outlook and rewritable pdf forms).
  • Ability to pass police checks.
  • Experience with firearms would be an advantage but not required.
  • Ability to understand firearms legislation/regulations.
  • Previous experience working in a regulatory environment would be an advantage but not required.

Main Responsibilities

  • Interviewing firearms permit applicants and judges.
  • Firearms Security Check on Private Premises.
  • Inventory checks of firearms held by dealers and permit holders (eg, handguns and restricted weapons).
  • Consistent and efficient processing of applications and security consideration of each license application.
  • As required, performs duties to assist the County Firearms Office in the regulatory functions and/or administrative and operational responsibilities of the firearms licensing process.

Weapons Administrator

For the role

Our goal is to effectively regulate the legal possession and use of firearms to keep all communities safe.

This role is primarily responsible for:

  • Processing various firearms related applications
  • Entering and maintaining information in the national database and other systems,
  • Undertaking other tasks and activities that contribute to the quality and efficient administration of the Arms Act and Regulations.

Due to the nature of this role, shift hours or weekends may be required depending on operational requirements.

  • Performs computer-based activity including license application checks, file management and data entry.
  • Processing firearms applications, certifications and permits.
  • Preparation of dossiers and updating of dossiers
  • Administrative functions to support the New Zealand Police in regulating the Arms Act
  • Works as part of a team and contributes positively to meeting policy and regulatory compliance goals/standards.
  • Able to effectively manage workflow within service delivery and accountability timeframes.
