Keeping it cool and not overcharging are some of the key steps to a longer battery life on your smartphone.

Smartphones have become an essential part of our lives for quite some time now. But a smartphone is useful as long as its battery is strong and working. While many of us protect our phones with heavy-duty cases, we seem to neglect efforts to protect the battery life of our smartphones.

While most smartphone batteries lose their effectiveness over time, there are some things you can do to make sure your phone’s battery stays in top shape. Here are 5 tips to make your smartphone battery last longer:

Decrease the brightness

Reducing the brightness of your smartphone’s display goes a long way in extending battery life. Although the latest smartphones come with state-of-the-art displays and provide significant brightness, they tend to put a lot of strain on the battery. Unless you’re using your smartphone outdoors, you can lower the brightness without harming your device’s performance.

In addition, switching to dark mode, i.e. changing your phone screen background from white to black can save more battery life. Using dark mode is more effective in low light because it puts less strain on your eyes. Therefore, adjusting the brightness levels of your smartphone can help you save quite a bit of battery life in the long run.

Turn off vibration notifications

The vibrate feature of your smartphone is useful in many situations. It can be a handy tool in public settings where you need to remain discreet. While we understand the need to keep your phones on silent mode, it is recommended that vibration notification is turned off unless necessary to avoid damaging battery life. Your smartphone loses its efficiency the more you use it, and vibrating notifications contribute to this process. Thus, keeping your vibration notifications turned off whenever possible is the best way to extend your smartphone’s battery life.

Avoid charging overnight or to 100%

It is a common practice to leave your smartphone charging overnight, especially if it gets drained after a full day of use. While waking up with a fully charged smartphone may seem like a great way to start your day, this habit can potentially shorten your battery life. This is because once your phone is charged to 100%, it will continue to charge the phone to keep its battery at 100%. Overcharging keeps the battery going and degrades lithium-ion batteries, causing them to wear out over time. Also, fully charging your smartphone causes heat to build up over time, causing more harm than good.

Use power/battery saver mode

Most modern smartphones are equipped with built-in battery saving modes. They can be activated manually when the device’s power is low, but it’s usually a smarter idea to activate them automatically when the battery level is below 20%. These battery saver modes help reduce power consumption by closing power-hungry apps as well as background apps that may be draining battery life. In most phones, battery saver modes turn off certain notifications and reduce screen brightness to further limit power consumption.

If you feel like your phone is draining power too quickly, consider turning off background apps when they’re not in use, or just use battery saver mode. Although you can still use your phone perfectly, the lower power consumption will mean that the device will operate at a slightly lower level. These modes also reduce the stress on the phone’s overall battery life.

Avoid excessive temperatures

Controlling the temperature of the phone goes a long way in extending the life of the phone. Not only do higher temperatures put more strain on the battery, but there is also the risk of irreparable internal damage.

A good way to control excessive temperatures in smartphones is to not leave them charged for a long time, especially when the device is fully charged. This means you shouldn’t leave your phone charging under your pillow at night or plugged into the dashboard on a hot day.

As mentioned earlier, charging your phone overnight or to the maximum limit of 100% is bad for its health, but it also causes temperatures to rise which can be difficult to control. Fast charging your phone for a long time can cause similar problems as the high voltage levels run the risk of overheating the phone and potentially damaging it.
