Ohio Wesleyan selects 14 first-year students for competitive varsity program

By Cole Hatcher

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University has selected 14 first-year students as its 2022-2023 Economic Management Fellows. The competitive four-year fellowships are awarded each fall by OWU’s Woltemade Center for Economics, Business and Entrepreneurship.

Scholars are selected based on their high potential for success at Ohio Wesleyan and their interest in business studies. OWU’s most recent Economic Management Fellows (EMF) and their academic interests are:

  • Jack Canada from Highlands Ranch, Colo., who plans to study financial economics and international business.
  • Brady Cormier from Waterboro, Maine, who plans to study business administration and economics.
  • Anna Haynes from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, who plans to study accounting and education.
  • Julia Hearn from Chatham, New Jersey, who plans to study environmental studies and business administration.
  • Areli Hernandez from Menlo Park, Calif., who plans to study business administration and international business.
  • Salma Ketat from Columbus, Ohio, who plans to study business administration and financial economics.
  • Rowan Kriebel from Sewickley, Pa., who plans to study business administration and astronomy.
  • Giovanna Lacarruba from Asuncion, Paraguay, who plans to study financial economics and business administration.
  • Shannon O’Malley from Asheville, Ohio, who plans to study pre-med and international studies.
  • Madeline Seibel from Ontario, Ohio, who plans to study general zoology and pre-professional zoology.
  • Grace Semptimfelter from Franklin, Tennessee, who plans to study business administration and Spanish.
  • Gareth Smith from Fishers, Indiana, who plans to study business administration and financial economics.
  • Ben Staggers from Greencastle, Indiana, who plans to study business administration and international business.
  • Aidan Vergi from Johnstown, Ohio, who plans to study economics and data analytics.

To be considered for the scholarship program, students must indicate an interest in economics, business administration, management (marketing or finance), accounting, or international business on their OWU applications; have high school records that indicate potential for excellence at Ohio Wesleyan; and full face-to-face interviews with Economics and Business faculty.

Choosing the EMF program ensures that first-year students receive an Economics and Business academic advisor, receive sophomore or junior mentors as freshmen, and connect with professional mentors as seniors.

Fellows are also enrolled in a first-year seminar open only to them. The seminar is team-led by the entire Faculty of Economics and Business, which helps students quickly build relationships with their new professors.

In the second year of the program, students take a faculty-escorted field trip to a major American city, such as New York, where they meet with prominent Ohio Wesleyan alumni and other professionals working in the city in business or government.
