19th century Powys country flats get a 21st century digital upgrade
Faye Jones MP and James Evans MS have been meeting with Openreach engineers who are currently installing the next generation of broadband technology in and around Brecon and Radnorshire.
During their visit, both politicians were shown how Openreach has built an ultra-fast Full Fiber network directly from the Brecon Exchange to serve properties in the surrounding area – including the beautiful 19th century Penoyre House in Craddock.
Built in 1846-8, the former country house – which is now a block of flats, was previously used as a school, golf club and nursing home – was recently connected to some of Europe’s fastest and most reliable broadband networks.
Working closely with the landlord of the Grade II listed building, Openreach engineers were able to discreetly install fiber to each apartment using an ultra-thin ‘invisible cable’ which minimizes the visual impact of installing a new broadband network.
Faye Jones, Member of Parliament for Brecon and Radnorshire, said:
“Openreach is making a significant investment in its Full Fiber network and the people of Wales and it was great to see the work being done by their engineers to connect really hard-to-reach parts of my constituency.”
Speaking after the visit, James Evans, Member of the Senedd for Brecon and Radnorshire, said:
“Having a fast, reliable connection, no matter where you live, is vital to all of us – in terms of how we work, learn and shop. I was amazed at how unobtrusive the internal wiring was and it was great to hear the Openreach team explain how they deliver ultrafast broadband right into our communities here in Brecon and Radnorshire and the rest of Wales.”
Thousands of residents of such “multi-dwelling units” risk missing out on the installation of fast, reliable broadband unless landlords give network builders such as Openreach access to their property.
Connie Dixon, Partnerships Director for Openreach in Wales, commented:
“We were really pleased to be able to show both Faye and James the work being done to connect properties up and down their constituency.”
“Penoyre House is a beautiful Grade II listed building and a great example of how our engineers go the extra mile to make sure our installations are environmentally friendly.
“We have worked closely with the landlord to make sure the build goes smoothly, but there are thousands of similar properties across Wales who are at risk of missing out on full fiber broadband because our engineers cannot access the property. It is vital that landlords work with us so that their residents are not left behind.”
Full Fiber can also help add value to properties – helping to attract and retain tenants. In February last year, the UK government published the results of a study which found that increasing broadband speeds could increase the value of a home by up to £3,500.

During the visit, the two politicians saw how Openreach had connected a high-speed fiber optic network straight from the Brecon Exchange to serve homes and businesses in nearby areas – including Penoyre House (19th century), near the village of Cradoc.
The farmhouse was built in 1846-8 – now converted into flats after spells as a school, golf club and nursing home – and was recently connected to a broadband service rated as the fastest and most reliable in Europe.
Openreach engineers worked with the landlord of the Grade II listed building to deliver fiber to every apartment, using very thin cables to hide them from view.

“Fast and reliable connectivity is essential for everyone, no matter where they are – to work, study and shop. It was great to see how complex the inner workings are and I’m delighted to hear from the Openreach team how they are delivering fast broadband for the communities of Brecon and Radnorshire and the rest of the country.”
Thousands of residents in “united apartments” will not be able to get fast broadband like this unless landlords allow network builders such as Openreach access to install their cables.

“Tŷ Penoyre is a Grade II Listed mansion and is an excellent example of our engineers’ efforts to arrange suitable installations for the circumstances.
“We worked closely with the landlord when planning this work, but thousands of buildings across the country will not be able to get full fiber broadband due to a lack of access to our engineers.
“Landlords will need to work with us to make it easier to bring the latest technology to their residents.”
