Some are wailing outside the hospitals as their family members denied beds in hospitals, which are running in full capacity. Several people are dying daily because of a lack of medicines and oxygen. Crematoriums are seeing round-the-clock mass cremations. “Those aren’t bonfires,” said Zoya Akhtar mourning the loss of lives. 

This time, in the second wave, Covid-19 is wiping out entire families. Not only the common man but celebrities including A-listers like Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan among others got infected. Some of them were lucky who recovered, but several others lost the battle to the deadly virus.

Malayalam actress Saranya who has worked in movies like Chhota Mumbai, Bombay March 12, Thalappavu and TV serials like Kootukari, Harichandanam, Avakashikal, Malakhamar and Rahasyam passed away due to Covid-19 complications at the age of 34 on August 10. She has tested positive for the virus in May. Following this, she was hospitalized. She stayed in the hospital for a couple of weeks. However, later she had to be hospitalised again because of pneumonia and other respiratory issues.

For the unversed, Saranya had battled cancer for nearly a decade. During that time, she underwent 11 major surgeries, but she didn’t lose hope and fought back like a warrior.

2. Nitish Veera

Lauded for his role in Asuran, Nitish Veera who also stars in Vijay Sethupathi-starrer Laabam. The 45-year-old Tamil actor passed away at the age of 45 at Chennai’s Omandurar Government Hospital.

3. Abhilasha Patil

Hindi and Marathi actress Abhilasha Patil who is known for her role in Sushant Singh Rajput’s last theatrical release Chhichhore passed away in her early 40s because of COVID-19. The actress had also appeared in other Hindi films like Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Good Newwz. In 2012, she was diagnosed with brain tumour. She won over the deadly disease and emerged a role model for cancer survivors by showing the importance of mental strength. 

4. Bikramjeet Kanwarpal

Known for TV shows like Special Ops and Anil Kapoor starrer 24 and films like Page 3, 2 States, Hate Story, Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, Aarakshan, Murder 2, The Ghazi Attack among others, actor Bikramjeet Kanwarpal passed away on May 1 due to Covid-19 complications. He was 52.

5. Shravan Rathod

Music composer Shravan Rathod, of popular music director duo Nadeem-Shravan, one of the most popular music composers in the 90s who gave chartbuster soundtracks in films like Aashiqui (1990), Saajan (1991), Pardes and Raja Hindustani, passed away on April 20 of covid-19 complications. The music composer had attended Kumbh Mela. His son says that he advised him against it, but he didn’t listen to him.

6. Satish Kaul

Popular for playing the role of Lord Indra in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat, Satish Kaul, who worked in over 300 Punjabi films and several other Hindi movies including Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha and Aunty No 1 and shows like Vikram Aur Betaal, passed away on April 10 due to COVID-19 complications at the age of 74.

Fondly called Shooter Dadi, Chandro Tomar, on whose inspiring life the Saand ki Aankh was made, Chandro Tomar, who won many national competitions after she picked up the gun for the first time in her 60s, passed away due to COVID-19 at the age of 89. She was admitted to a hospital in Meerut on April 26 after she complained of breathing difficulty. 

8. Pandit Rajan Mishra

Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Pt Rajan Mishra passed away of COVID-19 complications at the age of 70 on April 25. “He had taken the first dose of the vaccine about 15-20 days ago. He had a heart attack in the afternoon and he had another attack at around 5.30,” his nephew Amit said.

9. Rohit Sardana

Well-known journalist Rohit Sardana, who was currently working with Aaj Tak passed away in the second wave of coronavirus. He died of cardiac arrest after he tested positive for covid. He was fighting for his life in ICU. A day before his death, he sought help for patients on Twitter. He was 42.

Renowned Kannada producer Ramu who bankrolled over 30 projects including films like AK47 and Lockup Death lost battle against coronavirus at the age of 52. He was admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru after he complained of difficulty in breathing. He is survived by actor wife Malashree and two children.

Popular Tamil film director Thamira passed away of covid-19 related complications at a private hospital in Chennai at the age of 53. He was a ventilator for 20 days. He lost his life to a sudden cardiac arrest on April 27.
