The DC Animated Universe has taken part in a single continuity since Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox premiered in 2013. The multiverse isn’t a new concept when it comes to comics, as the characters can be taken on journeys beyond their worlds. For the DCAU, the multiverse is explored through various stand-alone films, allowing their iconic superheroes to become more than they’d ever been before. With storylines like Bruce Wayne living during Victorian times to Clark Kent taking part in the Cold War, these films give DC Fans great stories to explore.
10/10 Batman Vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Has Interesting Character Combinations
It’s not uncommon to have crossovers in comics, and the film Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles follows this trend. The film brings two iconic hero teams together, the mutant brothers and Batman, who help each other take down common enemies. The film is fun and quick-witted as the two groups learn how to oversee their differences and work together.
The turtles aren’t commonly seen in the DC universe, and their dynamics are an interesting contrast to Batman and his proteges. However, they aren’t the only interesting combination that the film provides, as the Shredder allies with Ra’s al Ghul and his League of Assassins.
9/10 Batman: Ninja Takes The Heroes & Villains Out Of Gotham
Time travel is a common plot device in DC Comics, and Batman: Ninja is one of the recent films that utilizes it. The plot begins with Batman battling Gorilla Grodd at Arkham Asylum, just for the hero, his allies, and various villains to be caught within Grodd’s Quake Engine time displacement machine.
The resulting blast sends them to feudal Japan, with Batman arriving two years after the others. As he adjusts to this new life, he and his allies regroup to stop his gallery of villains from taking over the country and altering history. The concept is not only interesting, but the animation is unique compared to previous DC films, allowing it to feel like a separate world from what DCAU fans were used to.
8/10 Battle Of The Super Sons Revisits The Next Generation Of Heroes
The first fully animated CGI film from DC is Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons. The film takes a twist on the iconic relationship between Batman and Superman, turning the spotlight on their children. The optimistic Jonathan Kent lends an altruistic hand to the abrasive Damian Wayne.
The two join forces, trying their best to stop Starro from taking control of people around the world. Some of his victims include the superhero parents of the two boys, placing added pressure upon them as they step up to save the day.
7/10 Superman: Red Son Is A Dark Twist On A Classic Superhero Origin
Everyone knows the classic story of Superman’s origins, but that changes in Superman: Red Son. The film changes course from the original narrative when the ship carrying the future Superman lands in Ukraine rather than Kansas, allowing the man to become a steeple for his country in the Cold War.
This new version of Superman meets familiar people, such as Lex Luthor and Lois Lane, as he becomes the new leader of the Soviet Union. As the film progresses, he continues to make alliances and enemies with other super-powered people and alters the course of history.
6/10 Justice League: Gods And Monsters Is All About Corrupt Power
A folly of having superhuman powers is being vulnerable to corruption. Justice League: Gods and Monsters explores this concept in a world where the Justice League uses its influence and physical force to maintain order. These heroes aren’t the same ones known commonly by most DC fans, which makes them all the more unlikable as they use harsh methods.
Their corruption allows them to be viewed negatively by the public, and when notable scientists begin seemingly dying at the Leagues’ hands, the world’s governments step up to stop them. Unfortunately, this version of the League has a lot to prove, even though they may have always had the best intentions.
5/10 Batman: Soul Of The Dragon Sends The Dark Knight On A Unique Adventure
To become the successful Batman that DC fans know and love, Bruce Wayne undergoes training to make him an efficient hero. The film Batman: Soul of The Dragon explores just this when Batman’s former martial arts teacher goes missing. The film is primarily set in the 1970s, lending an aesthetic to Batman’s world that hasn’t been seen in recent adaptions.
Years after his sensei sacrifices himself to save Bruce and his fellow students from otherworldly demons, Bruce is approached by an old friend in need of help. Bruce, Richard Dragon, and others band together to put a stop to the same dangerous weapon that once took their teacher from them, which now threatens the world by being in the wrong hands.
4/10 Batman: Gotham By Gaslight Is A Thrilling Aesthetic Change For The DC Universe
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight puts a thrilling twist on the DC Universe by allowing Batman to exist in the Victorian era. This iteration of Batman imagines him as an old-time vigilante who oversees Gotham City. While he isn’t popular with many of the city’s civilians, his duty to protect them becomes more difficult when the elusive Jack the Ripper begins committing murders.
The film brings many of Batman’s supporting characters to life, including a brief cameo of various Robins, Commissioner Gordon, and Selina Kyle. The latter is who teams up with Batman to help him solve the murders, and together they unravel a dark secret that had been plaguing the streets of Gotham.
3/10 Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths Features A Battle Of Massive Proportions
In the film Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths, the Justice League is forced to confront its worst potential. It’s another look into the multiverse, except this time, the heroes that DC fans know and love are pitted against darker versions of themselves, called the Crime Syndicate. On a parallel Earth, the Crime Syndicate attacks a heroic version of Lex Luthor, who saves himself by using an interdimensional device to travel to another world.
There, Luthor teams up with the Justice League, who agrees to help him, but when they arrive in his world, they only find people terrified to deny the desires of the Syndicate. This leads to a battle much larger than the heroes could have imagined, as they must stop their evil counterparts from destroying the entire multiverse.
2/10 Injustice Reveals The Darkest Side Of Superman
There is no greater pain than losing a loved one, and the grief is enough to consume Clark Kent when he loses the love of his life. This heartbreaking story is called Injustice, and it is only the most recent iteration of the concept already told in comic and video game form. The film version explores what could happen when Superman is pushed to the brink.
The film takes place on a parallel Earth and follows the hero on his path of destruction after the Joker tricks him into killing Lois Lane. His fellow superheroes band together to stop him, and when he decides to take over the planet, they must succeed no matter the cost.
1/10 Batman: Death In The Family Places Alternate Timelines In The Viewers’ Hands
Jason Todd is one of the most iconic characters to join Batman’s side. A former Robin and the successor to Dick Grayson, part of his tragic story is his subsequent death at the hands of the Joker. Batman: Death in The Family allows fans to experience this event and its consequences in an interactive film with seven endings.
The film explores alternate timelines based on the viewers’ choices. This can include the fate of Jason’s survival, how he chooses to interact with Batman, and his willingness to enact revenge on the Joker for his various wrongdoings.
